  If we open ourselves up to trying new things, these surprises arrive too. Morillas takes a risk by blending clashing scents that end up enhancing each other: delicate green notes, woods, and water embrace an incense that adds a smoky touch. The aquatic elements are used skillfully alongside the oud, which smells green, fresh, subtle, and resinous. It convinces me more than I expected: it’s rough, sometimes humid and salty like a kiss by the sea, yet nothing uncomfortable thanks to that curious interplay of contrasting notes. The fresh opening embraces the earthy and woody aspects of the oud and patchouli, resulting in a convincing scent that envelops you without being invasive or too penetrating. In the dry down, bergamot and ginger dominate, softened by matcha tea, while bursts of oud and incense become more noticeable after about 40 minutes. The heart features more smoke and plenty of wood, which grows considerably in the base. The incense smells fresh and somewhat sacred; the patchouli and the two ouds now come across as acidic and quite dark. At this moment, I think of a small Buddhist temple offering shelter when the morning hasn’t yet lit up after a tropical storm.
