She has been described as “dark” for her fondness for burnt aromas, from the licorice of Lolita Lempicka to the tarred tea of Bulgari Black. But she could just as easily be seen in green or mauve—anise and heliotrope are her favorite notes—or dressed in red like her diabolical Hypnotic Poison, whose apple-shaped bottle evokes both the forbidden fruit and the tree of knowledge. Could it be that the fairies of Grasse, just after a flutter of wings from her native Cannes, hovered over her cradle? Annick Ménardo has been endowed with a musical sense of chords and the melody of a composition. She cultivated that gift at ISIPCA, the international school of perfumery, cosmetics, and food aromas based in Versailles, where she took classes with Isabelle Doyen, and then at Créations Aromatiques (now Symrise) with her mentor Michel Almairac. In an industry that seeks originality while also requiring perfumers to listen to the demands of their clients, she composes her fragrances intuitively and without compromise—for those who know how to listen.
