I want to get this back. I’ve been looking for something similar for years and didn’t feel anything like it until I found it. Now I have eight bottles just in case, haha.

  • What About Adam by Joop is an obscure and very rare gem from the 90s from a house always known for being intense and colorful. It’s no exception: the opening is a party rocket with citrus mint and a green vegetable note like a tomato leaf (think celery without the bite) that envelops everything. Beautiful at first, but that vegetal and minty brightness fades quickly to reveal its true face: a jovial scent with minty citrus, synthetic greens, and a rubbery or gum-like heart that gives it robustness. The longevity is fantastic, up to 8 hours, with moderate-to-low projection that’s always present. It represents the brand’s risky approach and remains relevant. It’s an excellent proposal that generates love or hate due to that uncommon vegetable note, which is why I appreciate it so much.

  • As Christian1975 says, there’s nothing like it. What a shame it’s discontinued or only available at niche prices, hovering around €200 as Wolfgang Joop suggests with the name. What happened to Adam? He wanted to capture the scent of paradise, and believe me, he’s done it more than enough. It’s a bomb of citrus and greens; I hate citrus perfumes, but here the notes are stronger, making it more long-lasting and potent. With a slightly higher concentration, it could even be an Eau de Parfum. It’s a jewel that everyone hopes will return or improve, though that would be very difficult 🙂

  • As Christian1975 says, there’s nothing like it. It’s a shame it’s discontinued or only available at niche prices, hovering around €200, just as Wolfgang Joop hinted in the title ‘What Happened to Adam?’. It tried to capture the scent of paradise, and believe me, it succeeded. It’s a bomb of citrus and green; I usually hate citrus, but here the notes are stronger, making it more long-lasting and potent. With just a tiny bit more, it could be an Eau de Parfum. It’s a jewel we hope will return or improve, even if that’s difficult.

I wore this two decades ago, using it only once, yet it stayed with me for ten years. I applied it moderately, and the trail was brutal. That citrus-sweet combination was unique, and I loved it; it’s one of the few male scents I truly adored. It hurts when great perfumes disappear or get reformulated, but I’d rather a thousand times remember a beautiful one and tell my past self, ‘I enjoyed it.’ It’s better to die with honor than to live with embarrassing changes.

  • I’m reviewing one of my all-time favorites: What About Adam by Joop (1992). Just thinking about it gives me butterflies. This beauty, created by the master nose Calice Becker, was ahead of its time as the world shifted from the opulence of the 80s to a more relaxed austerity. The macho Kouros gave way to a man hinting at a new era. That’s how I see Adam: an aromatic woody scent with the most unforgettable and impactful dry-down, featuring mint, cassis, grapefruit, and tomato leaf (incredible). Minutes later, it unfolds with sandalwood, lavender, cedar, and geranium, and like a Hitchcock film, a dry vanilla with oakmoss and vetiver bursts in just before the end, sealing this masterpiece. I miss it, I long for it, I need it more than a few others in my collection. Inexplicable decisions that many won’t understand. Years later (1996), its female counterpart, All About Eve, was released—it was forgettable (unlike the brilliant movie). An oriental with apples and cinnamon. Adam, I hope we meet again.

  • I bought it almost by chance when I saw it in a perfume shop here in the early 2000s. When I tried it, it was a revelation. The tomato touch and acidity reminded me of a Nina Ricci perfume, Les Belles de Ricci, which my aunt Nora had—she was my fashion and perfume role model. Everything is great, what lovely memories

  • I bought this almost by chance when I found it in a drugstore here back in the early 2000s. The moment I smelled it, it was a revelation. The tomato and acidic notes reminded me of a Nina Ricci perfume, Les Belles de Ricci, which my aunt Nora owned—she was my ultimate reference in perfumes and fashion. Everything is great, what lovely memories.

  • And Eden blooms with this fragrance. Few perfumes today convey that sensation. It’s B E A U T I F U L!

  • In the 90s there was a plague of flat lime-scented perfumes, and this Joop is no exception, though it does it in a great way. The formula remains effective and almost addictive for sunny days.

What About Adam by Joop. I’m going against everyone: I didn’t like the fragrance right away. Upon buying and applying it, I had an immediate rejection. It felt bitter, synthetic, like smelling a damp room. I respect that everyone has liked it, but it was one of the purchases I regretted the most. I didn’t connect with it, even though it was a compliment magnet when I wore it. Out of all the perfumes I owned, it was the only one where, despite detesting it, I saw that everyone loved it. Olfactory memory is a mystery for each person. After reading the flood of positive reviews, I’m considering giving it another chance. Maybe after 25 years, either the perfume or I have changed. But I don’t see it as very likely to find it again. Rating: 2/10

Going against the grain: I hated What About Adam by Joop. The moment I tried it, I had an immediate aversion; it felt bitter and synthetic, like a damp basement. I respect that others loved it, but it was one of my most regrettable purchases. I just didn’t connect with it, even though it was a compliment magnet. Out of all the perfumes I’ve owned, it was the only one where I saw that, despite hating it, everyone else adored it. Olfactory memory is a mystery. After reading so many positive reviews, I’m thinking of giving it another shot. Maybe after 25 years, either the perfume or I have changed. But I don’t see it happening soon. Rating: 2/10
