First the good stuff: does it smell good? Yes. I still don’t know if there are cheaper alternatives (some by Rosendo Mateu have a similar style; the benzoin is identical, as far as I understand), but objectively it smells rich. Setting price aside, it’s a good fragrance to start with niche. It’s not rare or sharp; for iris lovers, it’s a delight. It’s, allowing for differences, a twist on Prada’s Iris infusion, but without woody resinous notes or neroli citrus opening. A slightly sweet and creamy sandalwood predominates with a barely smoky benzoin base. Projection is extremely high and lasts hours. But it’s not all perfect: it’s quite synthetic, linear, and lacks stability because the bottle was well-shaken. Although it’s a beast, so much intensity can get heavy and cause headaches, so one or two sprays are enough. It’s paradoxical: although the brand is called ‘Matiere Premiere’, there’s quite a bit of chemistry. I was amazed by the mini vial, which gave me enough for several occasions due to that strength. But it’s nothing new or original. EDIT: I made a purchase from the main house. After multiple mistakes and order issues, I thought they wouldn’t arrive; it was an odyssey. But they apologized, were extremely kind, answered quickly on Instagram even on weekends, and in two days I had the order from Paris with details and two size gifts. Thanks. Also, in 2024 the extrait was released. I haven’t tried it yet, but rumors say it’s improved, so the upgrade, if you can afford it, might be worth it.
Of the Matiere Premiere perfumes, this is the one that convinces me the least. It smells like dusty drawer mixed with a waxy sweetness. In the dry down, the balsamic sweetness of benzoin appears, soft and subtle, identical to ‘Encens Suave’. I perceive the scent as quite dry, with iris very present. I think it’s unisex, leaning masculine, with good longevity and projection. It’s pleasant, has warmth, and I’ll finish the sample with pleasure, but I won’t buy it.
‘Santal Austral’ is probably my favorite from Matiere Premiere so far. Sandalwood is the star: sweet, warm, and balsamic, with a slight talciness from the iris. Extremely creamy, sometimes with a lactonic touch that makes it almost gourmand. Super versatile and unisex, ideal for medium/cool temperatures. It’s not a beast on me like other scents from the house, but it wraps you in a beautiful cloud for over 8 hours. Spectacular; maybe not as unique as ‘Encens Suave’, but very addictive. Personally, it works great for me and I love wearing it. For next autumn/winter, I’m getting the 100mL.
‘Santal Austral’ is probably my favorite perfume from what I’ve tried so far in Matière Première. This is a scent whose protagonist is sandalwood. A sweet, warm, and balsamic sandalwood. Also slightly talcy due to the iris. Extremely creamy, and even sometimes, throughout its evolution, I perceive a lactonic point that makes it almost gourmand. Super versatile (though quite elegant) and totally unisex. Ideal for medium/cool temperatures. Without being a beast mode on me like other scents from the house, it wraps you in a beautiful cloud that accompanies you for > 8 hours. In summary, a spectacular creation; maybe not as unique as others (I recognize that ‘Encens Suave’, for example, is more original) but very addictive. Personally, it suits me better and I love wearing it. For the upcoming autumn/winter, I’m getting the 100mL.
In my last batch of Matiere Premiere samples, I imagined this would be my favorite due to my love for sandalwood and iris, but it’s the one I didn’t like. For me, Encens Suave was truly the king. I know everyone loves Santal Austral and that this one is unpopular, but my opinion counts. Santal Austral starts with iris, lots of sandalwood, and a milky almond touch, then turns powdery and dry. The base features benzoin and tonka. My issue is the drydown: I find it very sharp, sour, and grating. I have the same problem with Santal 33 or some Commodity fragrances. It’s not that mega-creamy, soft sandalwood I find in Gris Charnel or Milky Musk. I think I’m loyal to Mysore sandalwood, and Australian sandalwood just comes out rough and bitter to me. The sillage is moderate and longevity is high. On clothes, it’s excellent; I washed it and I can still smell it. It’s not unbearable, and at a distance, I don’t dislike it, but on my skin, it bothers me, so I won’t wear it. I don’t want to hate sandalwood because of this.
In my last sample purchase from Matiere Premiere, I thought this would be my favorite due to the sandalwood and iris, but I was surprised that I didn’t like it; ‘Encens Suave’ was my preferred one. I know everyone loves Santal Austral, but I want to share my opinion: it starts with iris, lots of sandalwood, and an almond-milky touch, turning powdery and dry. In the base, benzoin and tonka stand out. My issue is the dry down: I find it sharp, sour, and grating, just like with Santal 33. It’s not the mega creamy and soft sandalwood I’m looking for, like in Gris Charnel or Milky Musk. I think I’m loyal to Mysore sandalwood, and this Australian one feels rough and bitter to me. Projection is moderate and longevity is high; excellent on clothes (I washed the garment and it still smells). It’s not unbearable, I don’t dislike it from a distance, but it bothers me on my skin, so I won’t use it. I don’t want to hate sandalwood because of this.
People say it’s sandalwood, but you won’t find that screaming here. It’s a resin, talc, and amber blend where iris, tonka bean, and other resins take the lead. The longevity and sillage are insane. Honestly, it’s a masterpiece 🙂
Although it’s a sandalwood-based fragrance, don’t expect sandalwood to dominate. It’s resinous, talc-like, and ambered, where iris, tonka bean, and resins set the pace. Longevity and projection are enormous. An exquisite composition.
It’s not a creamy, milky sandalwood; it’s a resinous, stately wood where tonka bean takes over in the drydown. To me, it’s masculine, and for my brother, it’s feminine, but always with class. The sillage is gigantic: I sprayed it on my brother in my room, and the scent lasted an hour and a half, noticeable from the hallway.
Not that typical creamy milky sandalwood, but a resinous, stately wood where tonka bean dominates in the dry down. I see it as both masculine and feminine, very elegant. The trail is huge: I sprayed it in my room and the scent lasted an hour and a half, noticeable from outside my brother’s room.
Sweet and warm, it starts with a fresh iris that gives way to a mix of benzoin and tonka bean wrapped in sandalwood. The sandalwood isn’t a distinct note, but rather a creaminess that embraces the sweetness. It lasts over 8 hours with a powerful sillage (watch out with the sprays). It’s not sharp, but if you overdo it, it can become suffocating. It smells like a son of PDM Pegasus and Luna Rossa Black, but without the metallic edge and with more sweetness. On dry skin, it smells identical to PDM. Recommended if you like sweet and warm scents without the annoying spiciness of others, like Encens Suave or Azzaro The Most Wanted.
Sweet and warm, it starts with a fresh iris that quickly yields to a blend of benzoin and powdery tonka bean. The sandalwood isn’t a distinct note but a creamy embrace wrapping around that sweetness. Lasts over 8 hours with a powerful trail (watch out with the sprays). It’s not sharp, but if you overdo it, it can become overwhelming. Smells like a child of Pegasus PDM and Luna Rossa Black, but without the metallic edge of the first and with more sweetness. Dry down is identical to PDM. Ideal if you like sweet and warm scents without annoying spices. Highly recommended.
Flawless note pyramid: high-end creamy sandalwood with a dry, sweet vanilla touch. Although I’m a gourmand lover, this one has stolen my heart with its perfect balance.
A luxurious creamy composition where sandalwood shines brighter than iris, quite different from Perris Montebello. Elegant, enveloping, and warm, it projects strongly and lasts all day. You can tell the quality of the ingredients; it evokes maturity. As always, test before buying.
Fantastic creamy composition. Here, sandalwood is the star, very different from Perris Montebello’s Santal du Pacifique. It smells elegant, enveloping, warm, projects well, and lasts. You can tell the quality of the ingredients; it evokes sophistication and maturity. As always, test before buying.
