Descripción

Sandy Papyrus by Massimo Dutti is an aromatic woody fragrance for men. Launched in 2018, this composition was created by perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin. The opening features basil, grapefruit, and clementine, delivering a fresh and vibrant start. The heart reveals a blend of cardamom, green apple, and jasmine, adding depth and character. The trail settles on a base of sandalwood, patchouli, leather, vetiver, tonka bean, and musk, closing the structure with elegance and persistence.

This Massimo Dutti fragrance breaks with its past of budget perfumes, elevating ingredients and quality with a new and distinct eau de parfum. It opens with soft cardamomo sweetened by sandalwood and patchouli. Then it moves to softened basil and settles on sandalwood and patchouli, where the cardamomo acts as a counterbalance. A perfect example of how few ingredients can be complex and evolve in their simplicity. It’s softly spiced with buffered sweetness, smells incredibly good, and has above-average longevity and sillage. When I tested it alongside my other two new EDPs, my partner wouldn’t stop rubbing against me and sniffing me with pleasure. I see it as versatile—not summery, ideal for dates, dinners, the office (if not too formal), or special occasions where you want to stand out without being cliché. It projects warmth and empathy; it’s the scent of a confident, educated, humorous, and charming man. It costs 40€ in stores, an excellent quality-to-price ratio, and deserves a try alongside the other two. Au revoir.

This Massimo Dutti fragrance breaks with its past of economical perfumes in conception, ingredients, and quality, proposing a new and different eau de parfum from everything the house has done before. At first, it feels like a soft cardamomo scent sweetened by sandalwood and to a lesser extent patchouli in the base. Later it moves to the basil phase, also softened, and ends with sandalwood and patchouli, but curiously in this phase I perceive that the cardamomo makes the counterweight in the base. An example of how a fragrance with few ingredients can be complex and evolve within its simplicity. It is softly spicy and with buffered sweetness, smells incredibly well, and although I usually don’t talk about fixation and trail (because it depends a lot on each skin, climate, etc.), on me it has fixation and trail superior to average perfumes. When I tried it along with the other 2 new EDPs from Massimo Dutti, the woman I was dating at the time wouldn’t stop sticking to me and smelling me with great pleasure. I see it as quite versatile, although not summery, ideal for dates with a partner, dinners, the office if it’s not a very serious environment, or some special date where you want to give the impression of having gone the extra mile to wear something special and not trite, and that also smells very good. It projects warmth, empathy, it’s the scent of a man who doesn’t need to be aggressive to be noticed, the scent of a confident man, educated, with savoir-faire, a sense of humor, and happy with life. It costs 40 eur in MD stores, and for me it has an excellent quality/price ratio, so I think it should be given a chance and tried together with the other 2. Au revoir

  • Perfectly reviewed by monsieurleather. Essentially, little more to add. A grand bet by Massimo Dutti. Excellent quality/price ratio: 39.9 € for 100 ml. Eau de Parfum. They sell a pack of this new line with 30 ml each (Island Accord, Kashbah Sunset, and Sandy Papyrus) at the same price, so what is lost in quantity (10 ml) is gained in variety. There is a fourth: Sunday Breeze, which doesn’t appear here and on their website they describe it as “citrusy, green, and sparkling, evocative of the spirit of the Hamptons, from which emanate the effluvia of an environment on the edge of the sea that inspires and revitalizes.” I find any of them exquisite. Of an intoxicating aroma. They convey class, distinction, maturity, and formality. With exceptional performance. I perceive a kind of familiar air in their base, as if the bottom of the blend came from the same barrel, to be completed and seasoned later separately. Island Accord would be the one with marine and green accords, the one that brings more freshness, the most daytime. Kashbah Sunset the soft oriental, woody, and spicy, more nocturnal. And this Sandy Papyrus, my favorite, which is directly pure glory in a bottle.

  • Honest review by monsieurleather: you can’t add a single drop to this. It’s a brutal gamble by Massimo Dutti. Unbeatable value for money: 100ml EDP for just 39.90€. They also have a pack of the three new 30ml scents (Island Accord, Kashbah Sunset, and Sandy Papyrus) at the same price; you lose volume but gain variety. There’s a fourth one, Sunday Breeze, not included here, described as citrusy, green, and sparkling with a Hamptons vibe and a sea breeze. I find all of them exquisite—an intoxicating aroma that conveys class, distinction, and maturity. Exceptional performance. I sense a familiar family resemblance in the base, as if they come from the same barrel to be finished later. Island Accord is the fresh, daytime one with marine and green notes. Kashbah Sunset is the soft oriental, woody, and spicy, more for nighttime. And Sandy Papyrus, my favorite, is pure bottled glory.

  • Thanks for the recommendation, monsieur. It’s an honor. Totally agree: they are hidden gems that have gone unnoticed, perhaps with more sorrow than glory. On my part, I went headfirst to try Sunday Breeze. Result: another pearl! Admirable interpretation, superb recreation of that praised smoky pineapple accord. They overflow with quality, nothing cheap feelings. Either they went all out or we’re so used to bands of cheap candies that honest work at non-shocking prices catches our attention. Anyway, I just hope my countrywoman doesn’t kick me out one day with a debt. “Another cologne?” “Cari… listen… it’s monsieurleather’s fault…” “Who? What mesier? You’re an idiot! You’re trying to pull my leg!..” Je, je… no man, it’s a joke… Keep it under control! Expanding on the topic: on YouTube, I’ve only seen three brief reviews of the 2019 male launches: one by Isra Moreno from Mexico, with Sandy Papyrus as his favorite; another by BeautyLux, preferring Kashbah Sunset, though Island Accord is missing; and a last one, very interesting, by Gio Perfumes. Nothing on Sunday Breeze anywhere. So I make from this humble watchtower a call to action. The most famous ones are already late, to cite some from “Estepais”, Carlos Rubio, Tony Star Fragrance, Andrés PM, Juan HM, Raúl El Perfumista, Antonio from Fraganceando Madrid (I like his appreciations more and more), or the unparalleled Javier Orgaz (our most chatty YouTuber)… Also mention that, while at it, I tried the female perfumes from this The Secret of Scents collection at mouillettes and… boy, I liked them all. Hmm… good option for a gift, a pack of those 30 ml… Knock, knock. “Yes, tell me cari…” “Another cologne?…” I must leave you, I fear that, as the great Manuel Manquiña would say, there will be waves of nonsense…

Ambroxio, I see we agree. I already asked Fragrantica to add a profile for Sunday Breeze; for me, it has an air of Creed Aventus but better balanced and less tiring, and at 40 eur/100 ml eau de parfum it’s a great buy if you like that fragrance. As for Sandy Papyrus, I reaffirm what I said and think it’s very worth discovering along with the others, it was a pleasant, unexpected, and huge surprise, a hidden gem. Au revoir!

After years of smelling all kinds of scents, one starts to think it’s hard to get excited by new launches. That’s what I feel lately: my mind has evolved into a quiet resignation, accepting that whatever I try probably won’t thrill me. It’s a disillusioned attitude, not for me since I’m lively and take things head-on, but it serves as a defense against disappointment. If I expect little and get little, I don’t come out hurt. In this case, I expected more. Well, it smells with more quality than Zara-style launches, but it didn’t excite me enough to buy it; to highlight, it lacks something and doesn’t bring anything new or radical compared to other designer scents in that range, like Dunhill Man Moderno, which I found superior and more fitting. Elegant, yes, it looks better with proper attire, has a sweet touch that blends well with fresh basil and realistic cardamom. Watch out, it’s very interesting and has good performance if you’re just starting in the aromatic world, but remember that your skin and tastes have the final say. (Courtesy of monsieurleather)

Sandy Papyrus by Massimo Dutti is spicy, aromatic, and woody. The opening is fresh and spicy, not citrusy, but herbal and very aromatic. Over time, it gains semi-sweet spicy tones and an elegant woody base. At times, it reminds me of the style of Terre d’Hermès, though not the scent itself. It’s elegant and masculine, ideal for the office, casual wear, or semi-formal occasions, and in temperate climates like spring or autumn. Remember, these are just my impressions, so try it out and if you like it, go for it. Lasted 8 hours on my skin, noticeable for the first hour and then fading gradually.

It’s Tommy by TH with more pronounced basil, patchouli, and sandalwood. A delicious thing, superior to the original.

This is Tommy by TH but with an accentuated focus on basil, patchouli, and sandalwood. A delicious thing, superior to the original Tommy by TH.

  • I just bought this and it seems they’ve cut costs by simplifying the cap, which is now smooth without the marbled look or seal of the first versions. The liquid looks less amber than in the YouTubers’ photos. I didn’t smell it upon arrival so I can’t compare yet. (Edit: differences in the bottle and liquid color are due to the 2024 launch under the ‘Eau de parfum’ name). Mandatory buy because the person accompanying me loved it after trying all the others in the line; that reaction of opening their eyes wide says it all. It does resemble ‘Tommy’ by TH. Spiced, slightly fresh and green from the basil that dries down with a touch of sweetness and woods. The 50€ price tag seems steep, but I couldn’t say no and I have no regrets, haha. Performance is decent, about six hours of projection and good trail at the beginning.

  • Bought it recently and noticed they’ve cut costs; the cap is now smooth, lacking the previous marble finish and seal. The liquid isn’t as amber as seen in YouTube videos, and I didn’t smell it fresh out of the bottle to compare. (Edit: The bottle and color differences match the 2024 launch called “Eau de parfum”). A must-buy because my partner absolutely loved it after trying all the line; that “eyes wide open” face says it all. It definitely resembles “Tommy.” It’s spicy, fresh, and green with basil, dry with a sweet touch and woods. 50 euros seems pricey, but I couldn’t say no and I have no regrets, haha. Performance is decent, projecting for about six hours with a nice trail at the start.

  • Hey, this smells almost exactly like Tommy Hilfiger, maybe just a bit more potent. Totally recommended.
