Who said leather has to be a bore? Chopard, the watchmaker that’s usually right but quiet, hits the mark again with Malaki. This time, Leather Malaki understands leather through elegance, not excess. Goodbye to greasy, oily, or smoky leathers; here it’s a spiced suede, polished and refined, built over cedar for structure. The opening is fresh and spicy, without shouting, while the heart brings that clean, serious ‘cold incense’ that adds depth without getting muddy. In the dry down, you get the Malaki DNA: warm, masculine, and confident amber, with a trail that accompanies rather than dominates. No tricks, no pretense, just pure enjoyment that people notice on the skin. It’s my second favorite in the line, just behind Black Incense. A gem that deserves more attention. Sober, masculine, and super wearable. This is how you make a great leather scent.
I thought it would remind me of Nuit d’Issey in every way, but in the end, it left me cold. The opening is fine with that citrus touch, but then it dries down to something very basic: ambered leather, a little sweetened, and nothing else. The composition doesn’t fill me up, and if you add that it doesn’t last long, then it’s okay, but not for me. Out of all the Malaki scents, this is definitely the one I liked the least.
