Have you worn Layton Exclusif?

Tell us how it opens, how it settles on your skin, how long it lasts and when you wear it.

  1. Layton is my favorite, so I had high expectations for the Exclusif. It’s not the most intense version of the original; it’s a different construction. The original is more versatile, friendly, and bright; this one is rich, dense, structured, and creamy from the start. It’s less automatic but has much more identity. It smells distinct and expensive, and it’s worth it. The citrus top note fades quickly: mandarin, bergamot, and a very pleasant creamy almond. There’s no prominent apple here like in the original; it’s less youthful. As it dries down, an elegant touch of oud appears—not dominant or heavy, just to add texture and depth to the vanilla, removing its easy sweetness and adding shadow. The florals are clean and comforting without being obvious. Dry down is vanilla, woody, warm, and creamy. I detect sandalwood and patchouli. It’s a deep sweetness, almost vanilla with amber and wood, warm on the skin without being cloying. It smells more adult to me than the original, which I find youthful. I thought the oud and agarwood would make it hard to wear since I’m not a fan of those notes, but this is different: it’s not aggressive, it’s elegant with depth. I expected something more intense, but it’s more sophisticated. Honestly, I like it more than the original, which is hard to say when Layton is my favorite. Ideal for temperate or cold climates, elegant dinners, outings where you want to make an impression, or dates. I already have the hype; when I save up, it’s going straight into my collection. I love woody scents. I own four Swiss flankers of Shaghaf Oud and I’m keeping the rest. I love oud with a capital O—even when it’s in the name but missing from the scent, or vice versa. So, I really like this strange Layton. If you overspray Layton with Reminiscence Oud, you’d get something like this. A solid choice. If you don’t like earthy notes, you won’t like this. Basically, they aimed for something darker and more masculine, and they nailed it. Great opening. More nutty, less fruity than the original Layton, but as it dries down, it becomes a very masculine blend of oud, gaia, and sandalwood. If you don’t overdo it, it’s fine for the office. It dries a bit dry and powdery, like sawdust in a workshop, but I’ve always loved my dad’s and uncle’s workshops for that smell. Some who don’t know oud, guaiac, or sandalwood might just smell cedar. Definitely winter wear. It might lean a bit too much into ‘woodsy’ for dates, depending on who you’re seeing. Great projection and longevity. No matter the setting or purpose, I think this is one you can wear for your own pleasure without giving a damn whether anyone else likes it or not.

Layton Exclusif is a more intense, opulent, and sophisticated version of the classic Layton. It moves away from the accessible sweetness of the original to offer something more mysterious, dark, and deep, ideal for those seeking exclusivity and character. The notes are as listed in the top section, some more noticeable than others. – Duration: Easily 10-11 hours on my skin (I have high pH). – Projection: High at first, then turns into an enveloping bubble. – Sillage: Notable and elegant, ideal for special occasions. Is it worth it over the original? It depends on your preferences. If you prefer something accessible and versatile, the original is better. But if you’re looking for something dark, exclusive, and with presence, the Exclusif is a gem. In my opinion, they are very similar in the opening, but totally different in the dry down. I prefer the Exclusif a thousand times; it has great presence and a luxurious aura. If you enjoy perfumes with oud, amber, and a spiced woody base, but with a gourmand and sensual touch, it’s an excellent option. Fine note: 8.8/10

It’s a mature, dark, very heavy, and particular fragrance; it’s not for everyone and I don’t recommend buying it blind. Of all the notes, what predominates is an ephemeral citrus opening; it just greets you and disappears almost instantly. Then it dries down to a sweet, friendly floral part that accompanies the smoky woods, some incense, and definitely patchouli, all easy to perceive. When it settles, it becomes sweet, possibly recalling vanilla, as if the entire dry, potent smoky base were being caressed by a sweet touch that makes it more docile. Personally, I like it a lot; ideal for formal night scenes and preferably in cool or cold climates because its notes aren’t friendly. It doesn’t seem very novel or extravagant; woody, smoky perfumes with sweet patchouli already exist, and it reminded me a lot of Boss Bottled Absolu, though they aren’t the same. If you like challenging scents and want to smell like an elegant man, try it; highly recommended for cold climates or situations where you don’t want to sweat to enjoy it.

WARNING! Don’t buy it if you’ve tried an old batch. What a reformulation; in my opinion, they’ve ruined it. It doesn’t last less, but it feels like an inspiration from any designer brand. The scent lost its depth (that delicious dark vanilla that was there before is gone and not expected) and overall it feels lower quality. Is it a bad smell? Not at all, by itself it’s a good perfume… but with the price and compared to the original formula, for me now it’s almost trash. I couldn’t understand how a niche brand does this with a flagship product, or how a designer brand that sees perfumery as part of its business does it. Reading online, I found out that Parfums de Marly was bought along with Initio Parfums Privés in mid-2023 by Advent International. What is it? An American private equity firm that buys companies, squeezes them for profit, and then sells them. For my part, I won’t buy or try anything from Parfums de Marly (nor Initio) again. For me, they no longer exist; let those leeches go.

A very good perfume. If you already own Layton, you won’t notice much difference compared to the Exclusive; side by side, the differences are minimal. The opening is less bright; it’s 90% similar but with less sparkle. In the first hour, it feels slightly smokier and resinous. After two hours, this scent surpasses the original, projecting a bit stronger—not much, but more noticeable. The standout notes are vanilla, patchouli, mandarin, some sandalwood, and a smoky hint; the other declared notes are hard to identify because everything smells very balanced and high-end. My take: if you’re deciding between one or the other, it’s almost the same, and someone who doesn’t know both won’t catch these small differences. It has great performance, is very elegant, and truly excellent. Scent 10/10, Longevity 9/10, Projection 9/10, Sillage 9.5/10. Highly recommended.

I think it’s impossible to review this perfume without mentioning the original Layton. In my case, I never could get past Layton; that menthol accord (or at least what I sense) makes it smell like Vicks VapoRub all the time—actually, once someone commented, ‘it smells like menthol.’ I wanted to try Layton Exclusif hoping to find something different, and wow, there are noticeable changes. The opening feels like Layton, but as it dries down, I don’t feel that heavy menthol accord anymore. It’s a more mysterious, darker, and even more mature perfume. I see Layton for people between 15 and 30, while Exclusif is for those over 30 with a ‘business casual’ vibe. I liked it. I’ll wait until my Layton runs out (I sell decants in Chile), and then I’ll pick up a bottle of this Exclusif.

Layton Exclusif by Parfums de Marly. OMG, I loved it the moment I tried it and bought it instantly. I feel a half-sweet, half-citrus almond from the mandarin and bergamot, which then transforms into something super earthy, dark, and animalistic due to the oud, coffee, and civet. Just as described, it smells like THE BOSS, but not boring; it smells like a rich boss who is kind and fun (only with those who interest him), but firm, mysterious, and very dirty in bed. For me, it’s the perfume of Christian Grey. Compared to Layton, this is harder to like. Layton is the kitten everyone wants to pet, but Exclusif is the lion no one can tame and everyone wants to be. Just don’t like it if you don’t have the nose or the wallet to match. Success.

Tested on skin, it smells exactly like Amouage’s Interlude. The sandalwood and oud blend ends in an overly invasive incense. It lasts like a beast and has great class, but its versatility is zero: only winter-night or weddings. Sorry to the fans, it doesn’t give me compliments or personal enjoyment. For construction and quality, it’s a gem for a collection, but don’t buy it blindly. The scent is overwhelming, incense, palo santo, and strong wood. The personality is an alpha male who takes everything and doesn’t care about anyone’s opinion. If you think you have that personality, ask your close friends; otherwise, you’ll be a Winnie the Pooh wearing a Batman suit.

You can’t talk about this perfume without mentioning the original Layton. To me, regular Layton smells like Vicks VapoRub because of that menthol accord I detect; someone even said it smells like menthol. I tried the Exclusif looking for something different, and there are noticeable changes: the opening is the same, but as it dries, that heavy menthol disappears, leaving something more mysterious, dark, and mature. I see Layton for ages 15-30 and the Exclusif for those over 30 with a business casual style. I liked it; I’ll stick with Layton until it runs out (I sell decants in Chile), and then I’ll buy a bottle of this Exclusif.

  11. Landberk70

This is a beast, ideal if you already have Layton: next to it, there’s no difference; it’s 90% the same but with less brightness. At first, it smells smokier and resinous, but after two hours, it surpasses the original in projection, though not by much—just more noticeable. Strong notes of vanilla, patchouli, mandarin, and sandalwood, with that smoky touch; the rest blends so well that everything sounds luxurious. If you have one or the other, it’s almost the same, and those who don’t know them won’t notice. Top-tier performance, very elegant. Scent 10/10, Longevity 9/10, Projection 9/10, Sillage 9.5/10. Highly recommended.

I just tried this at a perfumerie. It’s like regular Layton, just darker with a strong wood note. It smells INCREDIBLE. I fell in love completely. I felt compelled to buy it. Edit: Said and done, I bought it a while later. I still love it, even though most people who smelled it on me agree it smells like ‘grandpa’ or ‘old man.’ It’s not a perfume to please the masses, but it’s not off-putting either, so it’s not out of place to wear. Lasts about 10 hours, and you can smell it the whole time. I’m super happy with the purchase! Highly recommended and a gem in my collection.

  13. It’s like an endless letter to the Corinthians written in ingredients: earthy, woody, and incense-heavy. It doesn’t speak to me. The long-awaited animal or almond notes are nowhere to be found, at least not in my experience. Layton Exclusif feels super invasive at first—mega masculine right out of the bottle. Maybe they toned down the intensity to make it wearable for women, but it still feels so heavy and classic that it bores and overwhelms me. It screams ‘suited business man in his 50s with zero imagination.’ A real letdown for me.

It’s basically an upgraded Layton. It opens with a citrus bomb that quickly yields to a smoky mix of oud and woods, but stays very pleasant thanks to the prominent talc-floral note. As it dries, it becomes sweeter, and I detect a super creamy vanilla leather. Nothing dirty or animalistic as some suggest; it’s perfectly balanced. It’s super masculine, elegant, and formal, best for those over 25. The original is more youthful and versatile for daytime. On my skin and my partner’s, it performs amazingly. Per-fu-ma-zo.

Few current perfumes compare to this beast. In terms of scent, it opens with a critical top note before revealing the vanilla and oud that give it good depth. Always test before buying; it’s a particular scent and some might not like it. In my collection, it’s the best in terms of quality (PDM already has high quality). What’s the downside? The price. The fact that it smells so good is partly negated by its cost. I recommend buying it only to those who have been in this world for a while.

Please forgive the fragrance experts if I’m saying something crazy; as an inexperienced nose that can’t really distinguish notes, I’d say it smells like smoke with Layton in the background. It even reminded me of Amouage’s Interlude or its budget clone, Midnight Oud by Ard al Zaafaran. It’s a perfume that might turn people off at first, but like many others, the more time passes, the more I like it. Still, I wouldn’t buy it because that ‘darkness’ just doesn’t suit me.

I tried it at a department store, and it’s like regular Layton but darker and much woodier. It smells incredible and I fell in love; I forced myself to buy it. Edit: I already own it and still love it, though many people say it smells like an old man. It’s not for everyone, but it’s not out of place. It lasts about 10 hours and I’m super happy. It’s the jewel of my collection and I highly recommend it.

I have to tell the story that won my soul: I sprayed it before bed, and 8 hours later, while still groggy, a divine aroma reached me. It was the Exclusif. My subconscious thought it was edible, and I tried to bite it until I snapped out of it. First confused trying to identify it, then I remembered the spray. A beautiful, long-lasting, masculine, and powerful scent. Buy it.

I loved this fragrance. It produces great pleasure; its notes are sensual, woody, sweet, smoky, and most incredibly, quite wearable—it doesn’t feel heavy. I imagine this is the scent I’ll use when I make a big purchase. On the other hand, as a collector, this fragrance was a 3-in-1 in categories where I have few representatives: oud, animalic, and gourmand… all in one.

  20. Another earthy-woody-incense scent that doesn’t speak to me. The animalic or almond notes I was expecting aren’t there. Layton Exclusif is super invasive at first, mega masculine; maybe they toned down the intensity for women, but it feels so heavy and classic that it bores me. It smells like a mature businessman all day long, with no imagination. It disappointed me.

I started this hobby six months ago, tried almost all popular designer brands, and decided to step up my game, so I bought a decant of this Parfums de Marly. To be honest: it smells like fine barn Vicks VapoRub. In the end, it leaves a very marked animalic note on the skin that prevents me from enjoying it. No one would compliment this scent.

It starts fresh and reminds me of Layton, but within seconds, it transforms into a super dark fragrance. This is what someone like Carlos Slim smells like. It smells good and you can tell it’s high quality, but the problem is it doesn’t last. Maybe due to my skin’s pH, it projects very little from almost the start, and by the 3-hour mark, I have to sniff it myself. Neither does it project nor does it last. I’ll wait a few months to see if maceration makes a difference.

  27. A true masterpiece; I didn’t expect such a dark aroma from Parfums de Marly. It starts fresh, but watch out for the twist: a few minutes later, it turns dark, slightly smoky, and resinous, very much in the Arab style. It reminded me of Elixir and Absolu de Boss, a real gem.

Wearing this makes you smell like a BOSS!… It’s not a common scent, but it’s still wearable. Great longevity and projection. The only downside, in my opinion, is that it’s strictly for winter and fall, obviously paired with a matching outfit—nothing casual or informal.
