  • It is a nocturnal leather that is slightly more versatile than Joop Extreme. The change from Orange Blossom to cocoa gives it a more citrusy touch, less dark and hard as is the case with Joop Extreme. A very good fragrance for Autumn and Winter nights, with a spirit and style different from Nuit de L’Homme, The One Parfum, and Eros, which abound in the night.

  • I don’t think JOOP! HOMME BLACK KING fits well into the woody oriental family, as the description suggests. Aromatic woody might be more accurate. It’s the same issue with other JOOP men’s scents: they don’t fit anywhere; they go their own way. All of them, including this one, are obsessed with performance and cosmic artificiality. And I don’t mind; I love that a perfume has high performance, and this one does. It’s all about mixing polycyclic hydrocarbons, iso e-super, ketones, and paroxistic musks. I say it without bitterness, as a declaration of grouchomarxist principles that maybe doesn’t want to say anything, but I think it says everything. JOOP men’s perfumes (the women’s ones are a different story) are honest, fundamentally honest. They are worth what they cost and cost what they are worth. They are affordable and high-performance; they are advertised little and sell because they do. Because they are easy to understand and grasp. I doubt much that JOOP! HOMME BLACK KING carries the notes listed on its card. Whatever they are, for example: Orange blossom? I don’t detect it anywhere. Vetiver? What can I tell you… well, not even that, it would have to be a vetiver like Vetiverol Encre Noir, and even with that, although with the iso e-super it carries, it has some familiarity, fourth-degree consanguinity, with Encre Noir pour homme by Lalique. Leather? Not Maria Sarmiento’s nor the Bazar de la Morería’s: here there is no leather nor is it expected, because the conception of this fragrance is light years away from the leather note and everything that note entails. What remains of the descriptive card in my nose? Black pepper. And that’s it. Because as I said, the rest of the aroma is a chord of volatized colamalte bodies, with a sweet pungent and woody tone; with that oxygenating menthol produced by iso e-super; with that sweet alpine result; with that distant vetiverol that sometimes reminds me of violets, sometimes of raspberries, and sometimes of soapy, musky room freshener. Do I like JOOP! HOMME BLACK KING? Well, yes, and I like it quite a bit, leaning towards a lot. Its performance is quite good and it could be worn at any time, although it would be more suitable for night events or parties. It might not be a perfume for connoisseurs, but it is a fragrance that more than adequately fulfills the beauty-price-performance ratio. One cannot go out every day smelling like Amouage or Sisley. At least, my wallet cannot.
