Gabrielle Essence by Chanel is a floral musky woody fragrance for women. Launched in 2019, this composition was created by Olivier Polge. The top notes unfold with citrus, peach, red fruits, blackcurrant, and petit grain; the heart reveals white flowers, neroli, ylang-ylang, jasmine, orange blossom, and coconut; while the base notes settle with musk, sandalwood, and vanilla.

I arrived at the launch with high hopes because I love the original: it smells like fresh breeze and wild but sophisticated nature. I crossed my fingers that Essence wouldn’t be too sweet or vanilla-heavy, and it wasn’t. It starts with a powerful neroli that drags the other flowers along. It’s too floral, very clear on that specific note. I wonder what Coco would say seeing this, recalling her artificial compositions. The neroli lasts for hours, decaying into a powdery, dry accord that suggests antiquity, as if it were filled with dust. It smells like some old classic, like a conservative grandmother’s, and while it’s very Chanel, that vintage touch works against it.
I tested it at a department store counter. The original seemed citrusy and decaffeinated to me, but this Essence is a different story. It starts with a hit of natural neroli, very similar to Diptyque’s Do Son. It evolves softly but persists. The best part is that it steers clear of the sweet trend dominating perfumeries today. It’s floral with a touch of ylang-ylang that adds elegance. Ideal for autumn on cool days or for bringing classic style to work. It’s not for young girls, but for women 30 and up. Chanel seems to have stepped up after the criticism of the original.
Smells clean and elegant, without pretensions. I love that sandalwood note that reveals its Chanel origins. The coconut is there, but subtle—just enough to give a creamy texture without dominating. It’s sophisticated, though I don’t think it’s the savior to address the criticism of the original. Maybe it serves to break away from that image of unattainable elegance and try something simpler. It’s not disappointing; it’s just what it is. Sometimes people criticize the original too much for not being a ‘power perfume’ that makes you feel invincible. But fulfilling its objective is enough. If someone gifted it to me, I’d happily accept it.
I hope it improves with time; it’s Chanel, after all. The price doesn’t justify its longevity, but opinions are divided. We’ll see how it evolves in the future.
As I explained before: Gabrielle Essence is voluptuous, solar, and enveloping. It plays with the four white flowers of the original, putting Grasse neroli as the absolute protagonist. Although I prefer the classic version for its subtlety, this Essence is much more intense and creamy. It has powerful projection; anyone wearing it will hardly go unnoticed. It’s a floral bomb that stands out above everything else.
Having given it a fair try, I’m in a position to share a bit about this Chanel Gabrielle Essence. First, I don’t know the original, so a direct comparison is impossible. Instead, I’ll share my first impressions of the Essence. The opening is beautiful—a touch of citrus and fruit that quickly gives way to my beloved neroli. It’s a gorgeous, creamy neroli that persists throughout the perfume’s development. Musk appears third, that kind that tickles the nose and lingers there. This note transforms it into a powdery scent, which is how it dries down. Woods and vanilla appear near the end, sweetening those neroli notes. On my skin, the dry down ends up as a beautiful sweet, talc-like neroli that wraps around me like a handkerchief. Is there anything to criticize? Yes, it doesn’t last as long as I hoped. But the fragrance is absolutely stunning, so it’s worth it. It bears a resemblance to Woman Intense, perhaps due to the shared neroli and sandalwood notes. I think this is a perfume every neroli lover should try because it’s simply beautiful.
Elegant, could be a classic floral, and it evolves well, but I keep testing it again and again. Despite claims that it’s seven times stronger than its predecessor, it doesn’t stick to me like other Chanel scents, which regularly soak into my clothes and keep smelling even after washing. It doesn’t convince me; while it has a good blend with quality ingredients, I feel the oil concentration is low, meaning you’ll easily finish the bottle without much lasting power. Pure commercialism.
Unlike Gabrielle, this fragrance has better longevity; both are exquisite, but at the price point Gabrielle commanded (and still does), it had ZERO staying power. Essence actually lasts.
Very fruity on me, dominated by peach followed by white flowers. It lasted an hour on my skin. Nothing more to add; despite its performance, I prefer the classic Gabrielle’s scent, which feels much more elegant. If you’re into neroli, go for the Woman by RL—it’s a much better perfume.
Small disappointment. I expected it to be more voluptuous than its predecessor, but it stays in that discreet, minimalist lane. It keeps that slightly mineral touch borrowed from Jour d’Hermès and amplifies the neroli. I’d also say there’s gardenia, plus a hint of Ylang-yang like a suntan lotion. I don’t really pick up much on the citrus. Lasts well but seems to have poor projection.
I bought this this summer; it just came out in Argentina, and like everything from Chanel, it’s quite expensive. The fixation and persistence are good, with a medium sillage. On my skin, it comes across as a somewhat strong floral-citrus; while pleasant, it doesn’t dazzle me. Although it’s an elegant classic, it doesn’t feel attractive on a sensual level—the citrus note is too overpowering. The bottle is classic, like everything from Chanel, and a good diffuser. I won’t be buying it again.
Delicious… an exquisite blend of neroli and wood that is absolutely enchanting, but unfortunately, it doesn’t last more than an hour on my skin. After an hour, it’s like I didn’t apply anything at all. At first, I thought my nose had gotten used to it, but even right up against my skin, it was gone. At the one-and-a-half-hour mark, I asked my husband for his opinion, and he said, ‘You smell like clean laundry, like fabric softener.’ That’s when I realized it wasn’t my nose. The second time, it was exactly the same. What can I say… even though it’s one of my favorite fragrances, I wouldn’t spend money on a Chanel that lasts only an hour.
Very clean, delicious, and delicate white floral. However, it doesn’t say much to me. It’s a rich floral, but that’s really all it is. For Chanel, I wouldn’t pay the price for a scent I could find in other high-quality white florals for much less.
A floral-citrus scent with a good initial projection. I was gifted a sample, and upon spraying it, J’adore by Dior immediately came to mind (it’s not exactly the same, but it’s in the same style). As for the scent, the opening is quite citrusy, and as it dries down, that ‘white floral’ note becomes noticeable, though it’s hard to tell which flower stands out. It’s a balanced, classy, and feminine blend, but on my skin, the performance is super low: about two hours of moderate-to-intense projection, followed by three hours of a soft sillage in the spring. Of course, it lasts longer on a handkerchief or clothes. Given that I already own J’adore, I wouldn’t buy this because Dior offers better longevity and sillage, and Gabrielle wouldn’t add anything new for the price.
A classic and elegant scent, just like all Chanel. To me, it’s neither pretentious nor particularly special. I’ll admit I’m not a big fan of the house because their fragrances give me a slight headache and get stuck in the retro-nasal zone, causing quite a bit of trouble. I had high hopes based on the listed notes, but it didn’t impress me enough to justify the price. The opening is lovely—citrusy, slightly fruity, sweet, and sparkling. It fades quickly, moving into ylang-ylang and white florals, but on my skin, I don’t detect much neroli (which I absolutely love), no trace of coconut or jasmine, and it ends up feeling powdery.
I absolutely loved this perfume because I’m crazy about the neroli note. If you’re looking for neroli, this one is a must-have for your collection. It feels youthful and fresh, even fresher than Coco Mademoiselle, and sweeter than Chance Eau Tendre. It reminds me a bit of Dior’s J’adore and Givenchy’s L’Interdit. The longevity is excellent, lasting between 6 to 8 hours. Since it’s Chanel, you have to use it with restraint; two or three sprays are plenty, no need to drench yourself like crazy. Be careful not to make the same mistake that made us hate Chanel; use your head. To me, it’s an incredibly rich scent, and worn properly, it could be one of the house’s best.
Although I liked it at first, being a pleasant and elegant fruity citrus, the dry-down into white florals feels too sharp and strident to me. On my skin, there isn’t a hint of floral sweetness after the initial burst, and it gives me vibes of citronella. I’ve tried it with different amounts and temperatures, but nothing works; something about this fragrance just doesn’t suit me. Luckily, I didn’t buy it blind. I imagine it would be a spring and daytime perfume for others. The sillage is moderate, but the longevity on my skin is only 5 to 6 hours. I adore No. 5, No. 19, and Coco Noir… but this Chanel isn’t for me. Scent: 4/10, Longevity: 5.5/10, Sillage: 7/10, Value: 5/10, Versatility: 7/10, Packaging: 7.5/10. Would I buy it again? No, I didn’t even buy it.
It smells great, but I think it’s better suited for semi-formal occasions. It’s zero-intrusive and lasts quite a while. The downside is that it has very little projection and sillage, so I have to pair it with the body cream. It’s a daytime scent smelling of white flowers and citrus, very refined.
This perfume makes you feel comfortable and elegant, a perfect balance between citrus, sweet, and floral notes. I recommend it for sunny but not overly hot days, ideal for autumn and spring. Very delicious!
Honestly, I didn’t like Gabrielle Essence by Chanel at all. I was expecting more neroli and white florals, but instead got citrus, ylang-ylang, and peach notes that give it a sharp edge, causing irritation and even headaches for me. It’s not a bad perfume, I’ll give it that, but it just isn’t my style. Alongside No. 5, these are the two I’ll pass on…
I’m a man and I loved this perfume. I’ve worn it and mixed it with other men’s perfumes considering my skin’s pH, and I’ve received many compliments from women (and men saying I smell good). Simply put, the scent is charming, elegant, and attracts glances when you pass by and leave a trail. Don’t be afraid to use it 🥰👌🏼.
Gabrielle has been my mother’s signature perfume since its launch. The original smells good, is super versatile, and feminine; I understand why it’s so popular. But personally, I never found in it what makes me vibrate with other perfumes. In Gabrielle Essence, although I still don’t see it as something special for me, I do see it better in scent and performance. They share the same floral DNA, especially when dried. The difference is in the opening: Gabrielle is super citrusy (a bit sharp for me) and Gabrielle Essence is more fruity, citrusy, and sweet. In the middle/base notes, neroli dominates, though not creamy or dense, but it’s clearly perceptible. Overall, I perceive higher quality here, although it still isn’t innovative. Moderate projection at the start and 6-8 hours of longevity. In summary: for me, this time, the flanker beat the original.
It has a very citrusy opening that combines with quite sharp white flowers and a soft sweetness. It’s semi-formal, suitable for people 25 and up. It’s elegant and feels expensive; it’s the youngest line from Chanel by abandoning the characteristic patchouli. While it doesn’t fascinate me, of the ones I tried, it’s the one I like most from the brand. On my skin, it has a moderate trail, projects for 2 hours, and lasts 5 hours with a musky floral scent; low performance for the price. I bought it impulsively and have no regrets, but I probably won’t buy it again.
What a wonderful perfume! I’d put it in the same category as 5th Avenue or J’adore: elegant and timeless, just for elegant women. I wore it to an important meeting at the studio, and my client complimented me when I greeted them. If I had to define it in one word: refined or classy. As for longevity, I sprayed it on a handkerchief and it filled the car with scent; it’s one of those that come and go in bursts. Happy with this blind buy; it brought me luck.
A very sophisticated perfume with that distinctive touch only Chanel has. Its blend of white and yellow flowers creates an enveloping aroma that fascinates me. Although it’s charming, I suggest applying it directly to the skin because it tends to stain clothes. It’s an aromatic jewel that captivates and has a lot of sensuality.
It’s a very feminine perfume with prominent white flowers, featuring citrus like grapefruit and orange blossom, along with neroli and jasmine. Pleasant? Yes. It could be for daily wear because its simplicity prevents it from feeling cloying; I think it’s a very proven formula that borders on the common but highlights it subtly. It’s too expensive for my taste versus what it offers; the scent could be confused with cheaper citrus blends. I feel a similarity with Dior’s J’adore; it’s clearly for mature women, elegant and sophisticated. But that same simplicity eventually bored me, and I stopped using it.
An elegant perfume of fine white flowers. Gabrielle Essence has a fleeting opening, a strong heart, and a solid base. After an hour, the neroli and yellow flowers dominate, wrapped in soft vanilla and musky wood, which takes away the youthfulness promised by the citrus and gives it a distinguished touch. Its trail is moderate, ideal for the middle of the season. It’s simple but refined. It could be for daily use, preferably during the day. Its scent evokes my childhood; maybe it shares notes with my grandmothers’ perfumes. I feel very secure when I wear it.
On my skin, it smells exactly like J’adore. I love it. I went to buy Coco Mademoiselle Intense and they gave me a sample of Gabrielle Essence; to my surprise, I’m obsessed. I’d definitely wear it in summer (without over-spraying) for special occasions: a nice dinner, brunch, or after work. I really love it.
It’s a pleasant floral, but I don’t see anything that sets it apart from so many similar ones. For Chanel, it has nothing special and the performance isn’t great. It feels too light to be a Chanel.
Very similar to Polo Sport Woman from 1997, just more elegant. Beautiful fragrance, poor longevity.
I don’t get why people hate such a lovely, elegant fragrance. The citrus opening fades quickly, but I don’t feel that sharp petit grain that bothers others; the yellow floral heart smells fruity thanks to the peach, sweet but not cloying. The sandalwood adds elegance, subtly powdery and musky like Chanel’s DNA. It’s not heavy, perfect for daily wear, and on my skin it lasted until the next day. I like it a thousand times more than the Chance line. That musk feels overwhelming to me. Give it a chance.
Gabrielle Essence is the rich cousin of J’adore, the one few know because it’s antisocial but turns out to be an admirable Mr. Darcy, and once you know it in depth, you don’t want to let go. If J’adore owns the whole estate, Gabrielle Essence owns half a town… Then it makes you realize that wealth isn’t what matters, but the essence, the intelligence, honesty, and kindness. It smells of innocence, of a new doll in its box, discreetly powdered and musky. Floral, citrusy, with that yellow aldehydic neroli from Giorgio Beverly Hills, woody, animalic, and fresh, a perfume wrapped in the roots of the brand that hooks you to the point of smelling the inside of the doll non-stop: I’m reading a book, I smell the doll, I’m at the beach soaking up the sun, I smell the doll, I’m driving, I smell the doll… Addictive beyond measure! Sensual, comfortable, elegant, vibrant, and clean. I’ll love it forever as long as it doesn’t cheat on me and fall into reformulation. 🕯️ 10/10.🔥
Wishing all participants of this chat a beautiful day. CHANEL GABRIEL ESSENCE, I take off my hat to the creator of this jewel, OLIVIER POLGE👏👏. We must appreciate this master’s professionalism, who created a phenomenal fragrance. Worthy of admiration and sales forever. On my skin, it lasts more than 12 hours. It wraps me in an aura of neroli, the most exquisite flower in elegant perfumery like this. The creaminess of the coconut along with the citrus, red fruits, and blackcurrants, the sweetness of the red fruits and vanilla bathe this fragrance in joy. The musk plays an important role, giving it splendor and purity. It’s truly captivating, intoxicating. I find it sexy, feminine, and super elegant. I use it for special moments so I never forget the special day I wore it. I recommend it because it leaves me speechless; it’s a perfumon. Perfumes and more…NAHUELL.
I’m in love with this perfume; it smells delicious, makes me feel beautiful and confident. My signature scent would never make me angry, plus it gets lots of compliments 🙊☺️.
I simply love it 😍!!!
Pure elegance, empowered woman.
Gabrielle Essence is such a cute fragrance for those days when the heat starts to rise and you happily pull out your summer clothes, those days when you’re almost daring to go out with wet hair, those sunny days. It’s a wonderful floral; I own the regular Gabrielle, and what can I say? This one, with that extra boost of flowers and red fruits, gives it a cheerful, carefree vibe. It’s less serious than other Chanel perfumes (without losing that unmovable elegance), but that stuffy side is left to other cousins. It projects amazingly; if you spray more than 4 times, you can smell it for hours, even the EDP. Normally I don’t pay much attention to perfumes, but this one ensures I stay scented for a while, though never longer than I’d want… I have to confess that a perfume that doesn’t let me be in peace bores me, which is why they usually tire me out. This one doesn’t; it’s noticeable for just the right amount of time.
A chic, elegant scent perfect for daytime. It smells great, basically a blend of white and yellow flowers. I’ve worn it in summer; it has a fresh touch. Regarding longevity, it’s not bad but doesn’t last all day, maybe around 5 hours. I haven’t received compliments since buying it, so it’s more of a personal preference or it’s hard to detect unless you’re close. It doesn’t drive me crazy, but it’s a good fragrance, well-blended and quality.
An absolute exquisite. Luxury and sophistication that retains its warmth. It feels like the perfume of a gracious hostess in a lovingly decorated home, wanting her guests to have an unforgettable moment. A beautiful fragrance. I just wish it lasted longer on the skin.
Ylang-ylang and neroli are front and center, with a jasmine base that makes it absolutely gorgeous. It’s a stunningly well-crafted, super feminine perfume. For me, it’s perfect for spring and summer; it really suits that weather. The longevity and sillage are excellent.
