I’m making my debut reviewing this fragrance, which isn’t as popular as other scents from the Japanese house. Not due to a lack of reviews here, but because there are few references on forums. I understand that the city of Zagorsk (now Sergiev Posad), north of Moscow, is a spiritual epicenter of the Russian Orthodox Church. I don’t know if I’ll be like me, an unconditional devotee of Russian culture (especially musical), but it fascinated me from the first moment. More than oriental, despite the incense, it’s woody, coniferous, and fougère. I imagine walking on a gray autumn afternoon across the Russian steppe, seeing the smoke from dacha chimneys and a wooden church blurred in the distance. Very evocative. What’s missing is longevity: quite moderate, at least on my skin. It’s cliché to say every skin performs differently, but it’s an ideal creation for fresh and rainy days.
Zagorsk opens very vegetal and slightly acidic (in a good way). Then comes a carrot note: young, fresh, from damp earth. Followed by iris, joined by the scent of sharpened pencils. Then cedar and a distinctive birch, slightly acidic. Very melancholic. Birch is used a lot in Polish literature and poetry; it always fills me with melancholy, not joy: they are beautiful but delicate, fragile, and sad. The incense comes at the end, when the chords are hidden. It’s very soft, not as monumental as Avignon. It smells like a small Orthodox church in eastern Poland, modest: wooden pews, icons, the scent of wax candles. In the background, smudges of incense. It’s very calm, soft, balanced, contemplative, and devout. Zagorsk is Orthodox tradition; contemplating it is creating an icon through prayer. Painting an icon is already prayer. The parameters are tragic. After two hours, it only lingers in my hair, not on my skin. Sorry for the errors; this is my first review in Spanish.
After testing a sample, I’d say it’s an incense perfume, but not of Catholic tradition, rather of Orthodox rites. It has a green touch of cypress or conifer forests; when that comes through, the incense shines, leading you to the solitude of a church to pray. It reminded me of the background incense in Loewe 7. Zagorsk is simpler and more direct, ideal for incense lovers. It has less murkiness and overlap than Loewe 7 (which I still need to test more), and the incense takes center stage. My intuition says that those who dislike the current Loewe 7 formula will love this. When I finish my Avignon, I might buy it.
Zagorsk is a cold-character perfume. It smells of smoky pine forests—not juicy leaves, but the resin of a bonfire in a dark Nordic forest. Unlike other green incenses that smell like turpentine, here there is a very natural, bitter smoke. In the background, nostalgic violets sweeten it slightly. Few fragrances evoke such a concrete emotion in me; Zagorsk always gives me melancholy, whether from memory or the essence itself. It’s ideal for a rainy February day or a sad Sunday. It doesn’t comfort me like an amber scent; instead, it’s meditative, leading me to a serene depression one must surrender to in order to be truly on earth. It is my favorite, by far, of the entire Comme des Garçons incense series.
I need this. It struck me as green, fresh, mentholated, and smoky. It evolves like pure air after rain, bringing freedom and calm. The longevity is short; it fades over time, but it’s perfect for daily wear. My boyfriend described it as an oriental opening—warm, with incense, flowers, resins, and pine—followed by citrus notes. I imagine being in a super comfortable, relaxed spot. Edit: I used it for the first time yesterday (the previous test was on blotter paper), and the incense was a bit strong. It lasts quite a bit; I woke up smelling like a church. I’ll keep it in decant, but I wouldn’t buy the full bottle.
