With so many notes that are usually smoky, I expected something complicated, and it is a bit, but not in a bad way. On my skin, it’s more balsamic and sweet. The smoky touch is there, but it doesn’t dominate, and black pepper isn’t an issue either. The flaw is that, although it performs well, there’s a point I don’t like: the note blend feels uneven. I can’t explain it well, but it just doesn’t convince me.
Black isn’t as black or dark as it says. The scent blends smoky leather with sweet balsamic notes and a pleasant, non-aggressive licorice, making it softer than similar fragrances. It evolves little, feels modern, wears well, and isn’t overly powerful. I really like it for this perfect balance. Rating: 8.
At first, it smells like smoke, pepper, and a touch of sweet licorice. It’s not as dark as its name suggests, but it’s serious due to the wood and leather. I like the opening for that licorice, though it fades quickly and lets the pepper dominate, which I don’t enjoy. You only smell the licorice if you get very close; from afar, it’s almost nonexistent. Once dried, it smells less smoky but still carries heavy wood and pepper. I see it as unisex and suitable for any weather since it’s airy, but on my skin, it’s very weak. It lasts hours but clings tightly to the skin: it smells good for the first hour, then disappears unless you’re right next to it. The opening is surprising and balanced, but it doesn’t last. Later, it becomes shy and boring. If the opening lasted longer, I’d buy it, but it’s very short-lived.
Love it. Starts with a potent incense and a hint of pepper that shifts into leather in the mid-notes, finishing with birchwood and vetiver accented by licorice for sweetness. It’s smoky, with a pitch-like aroma and dark at first, but the licorice brightens it up. I liked it more once it dried down; the opening overwhelmed me with so much pepper. It’s elegant, lasts well, perfect for fall, winter, and night. Sillage is moderate.
