  1. Black Granit by Pascal Morabito is not granite, nor is it black; it’s another perfume where the name is just part of the confusion ritual. The sheet claims it belongs to the Olfactive Family, but by Odin, I don’t know what that even means since everything smells like something. Sometimes I even use ‘Aromatic’ for perfumes I’m reviewing, though I have no idea what that category refers to either, because everything is aromatic. I think when Fragrantica talks about Olfactive or Aromatic Families, they’re referring to generic perfumes that don’t meet the requirements to be assigned to a proper fragrance family, and that’s exactly where BLACK GRANIT falls short. Being generic isn’t good or bad, it’s just generic, with its own virtues and flaws. The scent is linear and unpretentious: a herbal-floral blend, slightly woody, but coated in a lightness that might be excessive. It smells a little bit like everything and a whole lot like nothing specific. I detect notes of bergamot, calendula, apple, and above all, a very soft white musk that gives it a faintly soapy air, with a touch of a wildflower that could be lavender or chamomile. It’s a refreshing cologne for daily hygiene, nothing more. It doesn’t stand out for anything special, but it’s not disastrous either; it sits right in that middle ground of ‘unnoticed’. Its longevity is poor.

This is another lesser-known house offering decent perfumes at tempting prices. If you’re tired of major brand launches that sometimes don’t live up to their legacy, discovering something new like this Black Granit could be interesting. It opens as a dark, spicy praline (chocolate) with gourmand notes, then evolves into a woody citrus finish with mid-level longevity and sillage. It’s definitely a pleasant, modern fragrance that sparks interest in exploring more creations from this designer.
