Beyond Paradise carries the weight of Luca Turin’s opinion, who said it’s the only work capable of bottling a beautiful sunset. For me, it’s nothing extraordinary, just an evolution of approaches like CK ONE or Paco Rabanne. It has a relaxed, kind, eternally youthful edge, almost teenage, and quite unisex. It opens with a sweet, heavy floral accord, with reminiscences of white sand beaches, virgin vegetation, and turquoise waters. It shows green and bitter traces with a hefty floral load that appears quickly after leaving the citrus opening and lasts for hours. It’s not a fragrance of masculine or alpha-male character; it’s the personification of an easy-going life, Caribbean vacations, or refined coastlines. Turin’s comments have attracted many of us, but in the end, it seems like a simple work, almost as subjective as his sayings. To finish, it has no resemblance to Hilfiger Athletics, at most in that teenage approach.
I believe “Calonitic” refers to a scent with a lot of Calone or based on it. Calone 1951, discovered by Pfizer in 1966, gives the impression of a fresh seaside shore using ozone and marine nuances. It’s similar to certain brown algae hydrocarbons. It’s an unusual scent with an intense “sea breeze” note and light floral tones. It’s been used since the 80s for its fresh ozone aquatic chords and is dominant in marine perfumes from the 90s.
Buy blind; if I’d known it beforehand, I wouldn’t have brought it, but well, I’m starting to use it. The opening is quite calonitic with the bitterness of grapefruit. Shortly after, I notice the greenness of the hyacinth and a dry, indolic jasmine (the whole ensemble feels forced and unnatural). I don’t know how the plum wood smells, but when it seems like it’s about to fade, the amber emerges, giving it life. It’s not the typical niche amber; it’s a balsamic accompaniment to the flowers that makes the ensemble usable and passable. It lasts 6 or 7 hours without issues.
BOTTLED JOY: I had it in 2006 and it was like a cheerful spring in a bottle. It had a soft but distinct fruity aroma, more intense with more quantity. The citrus cocktail had the charm of a tropical drink, with a fresh-cut cucumber scent and a special sweet touch. Maybe Nautica Voyage or Wanted by Night come close, but this is more cheerful and spring-like. The amber was subtle, just reinforcing the fruity and floral notes. At university, people said it smelled down the hallway, a good sign. If applied excessively, it can saturate and become cloying. The fixative was good, losing strength after 2 hours but staying decent. It wasn’t strong-charactered, but cheerful for warm climates, the beach, and informal settings. Recommended sprays: 5 to 7. Fixative: 8. Sillage and Intensity: Medium. Awards: “We’ll always miss this.”
BOTTLED JOY: I tried this back in 2006 and it was pure spring in a bottle. A soft yet distinct fruity scent that intensifies with more application. The citrus note smells like a tropical cocktail, with fresh cut cucumber mixed with something sweet that makes it unique. It reminds me a bit of Nautica Voyage or Wanted by Night, but nothing else, because this is much happier and more spring-like. The amber is subtle, just reinforcing the fruity and floral notes without overpowering. In college, people said I smelled down the hallway, with a trail several meters long. If you overdo it, it can become cloying, so watch your dosage. The fixative is good; although it loses strength after two hours, it still leaves a decent scent. Not a fragrance with a strong personality, but cheerful, ideal for warm spring climates, the beach, and casual looks. Recommended sprays: 5 to 7. Fixative: 8. Sillage: Medium. Intensity: Medium. Awards: ‘We’ll always miss this one’.
Beyond Paradise could be hiding in any garden with white flowers and lemon trees, especially when the sun feels tedious. The bottle and the scent emulate a perfect sunset. It smells of shyly sweet white flowers, perhaps jasmine, with other lovely field florals, all covered in orange blossoms and citrus that give it a spark, especially at the start. It’s a full-bodied unisex.
I used it in 2010, bought two bottles, and used them until I found out it was discontinued. I get bad luck with perfumes; I always like the ones that get discontinued later. It happened with Tommy’s True Star, Loud, Intuition by Lauder, Unforgivable by Sean John, Midnight in Paris, Red Delicious, and Be Delicious by DKNY. I liked Beyond Paradise for its fruity and floral aroma. They say it’s available in Punta Arenas warehouses, but they don’t ship to my region.
It feels bland, weak in personality, and mostly floral. I haven’t sensed any citrus. Despite the many components, it smells flat and unchanging over time. My partner says it smells like cucumber. It’s not strictly masculine; it could easily be unisex.
Hyacinth ruins the whole perfume. It’s a floral scent for men and wouldn’t be bad if it weren’t for the fact that hyacinth ages fragrances. In short, if you want to smell like a grandpa wearing a coat in summer and using a walker, this is your perfume. The bottle is gorgeous, but Lauder doesn’t know how to interpret men; all their formulas for us are problematic.
It doesn’t smell like hyacinth as Fragrantica claimed. It’s tropical grape, plum wood, and aquatic notes. The opening smells like a purple push-pop from the 90s: bitter, cold, very fruity and green, but not sweet. It reminds me of the classic Polo Blue’s wet sponge but without copying it. Then it evolves into a sensual 90s amber, sandy and skin-like, without vanilla, warmer. The concept doesn’t quite click for me and the performance is mediocre, but I love the bottle.
