  • A fragrance dedicated to ‘Les Fleurs du Mal’ by the French poet. The opening is very spicy, with peaks of pepper and caraway; juniper berries round out the accord. It feels leathery, salty, dry, and overwhelming—pulled from the earth’s depths, mixed with burnt trees. Then incense appears, followed by the heart: smoky leather and hyacinth, the soul of the fragrance. Here, it takes a turn and feels more tempered, warm, like human skin, balsamic, woody, with papyrus and patchouli. The base is dark as ash, cruel, mature, complex, and complicated. Baudelaire is an exceptional leather scent full of nuances. It’s heartbreaking and beautiful, just like Baudelaire’s poems. Rating: 7

Overall, even though they’re different, they share an air reminiscent of L’Instant EDP Extreme, but with that typical dirty note from Byredo that I don’t like and can’t link to the official notes. Could it be the papyrus? That dirtiness reminds me of the smell of manure. At least it’s worth acknowledging that the house wants to put its own distinct stamp on its entire perfume line.

I’m obsessed with leather and wanted to try this Baudelaire. It’s an uncomfortable leather—not because it’s rough, but because it’s overseasoned with a ton of spicy and aromatic notes that are irritating. It’s like a pot of salty acid burning your mouth, and instead of settling, the intensity keeps rising. I’d define it as waterlogged leather mixed with wriggling-eyed things. I even imagine a smoothie with fish scales; it doesn’t smell like seafood, but it has that dry, gritty aftertaste of old skin or hair mixed with cured fish and cedar shavings, just like the cedar sheets in bad cigars. I found it awful. Sometimes I catch a hint of sweet oud, but that synthetic, odd touch is the house’s signature; I’ve never tried a balanced Byredo before. I’ll keep exploring the brand…

It’s an uncomfortable leather—not because it’s rough, but because it’s overloaded with a bunch of spicy and peppery notes that are irritating. It feels like a pot of brine acidity burning your mouth, and instead of settling down, the intensity keeps rising. I’d define it as soaked leather mixed with things that have eyes that never stop moving. I even imagine a smoothie with fish scales; it doesn’t smell like seafood, but it has that dry, harsh aftertaste of old skin or fur mixed with dried cod and mahogany shavings, just like the cedar sheets in stinky cigars. I found it awful. Sometimes I catch a hint of sweet oud, but that synthetic, weird touch is the house’s signature; I’ve never tried a balanced Byredo before. I’ll keep exploring the brand…
