  • This perfume was a hit for Archiste: they didn’t seek the impossible or unseen notes but took an idea that already works—a sensual spiced chocolate drink—and turned it into a perfume. With the ingredients alone they have success guaranteed: cacao paprika cinnamon and a little vanilla. According to the website Anima Dulcis is based on a drink from the Real Convento de Jesús María in Mexico City in the late 17th century along with the convent’s aromas. Archiste delivers on its promise: it’s a revitalizing scent a cacao elixir that gives you the strength to get through the day. It doesn’t smell like a cloying childish gourmand perfume; rather it’s quite dark with a predominance of dark semi-sweet cacao mixed with paprika which accentuates the note but only tingles a bit in the dry-down. Cinnamon is in the background very light and at the end we have the vanilla. At first some herbs are felt similar to basil. It’s totally unisex well-designed to catch attention with style and a mature feel. Obviously for cold seasons; the sweat of warm days would surely ruin the fragrance and besides it would be very heavy. The longevity is long: about nine hours and I’m satisfied with the trail; it’s noticeable but not overwhelming. The price is around €165 for 55 ml so it has to please you a lot to buy it but if you’re obsessed with cacao it’s worth the effort because Anima Dulcis does not disappoint. Personally I found it excellent.

  • Well this perfume was a hit by the developers of l’Arquiste; they didn’t complicate things or search for the olfactory holy grail simply taking an idea that already works—a sensual spiced chocolate drink—and turning it into a perfume. Just by the choice of ingredients they have success guaranteed: cacao paprika cinnamon and a little vanilla (in that specific order) who doesn’t like this? According to the advertising Anima Dulcis is based on a drink served at the Real Convento de Jesús María in Mexico City in the late 17th century along with the convent’s own aromas. For me Archiste delivers on its promise; this fragrance is a revitalizing scent a cacao elixir that gives you strength and spirit to get through the day. Its scent is not that of a typical cloying childish gourmand perfume; it’s quite dark with total predominance of dark semi-sweet cacao mixed with paprika that accents the note very well but only tingles a bit in its dry-down; cinnamon is felt in the background and very lightly and we have vanilla at the end. At first some spices or herbs similar to basil are felt. It is totally unisex and well-designed to catch attention but with style and a mature feel obviously for cold seasons; the sweat of warm days would surely ruin the fragrance besides being very heavy. The longevity is long-lasting: about 9 hours and I’m also satisfied with the trail which is noticeable but not overwhelming. Its price is around €165 for 55ml so it has to please you a lot to purchase it but if you’re crazy about the cacao notes I think it’s worth the effort because Anima Dulcis surely won’t disappoint; personally it seemed excellent to me.

  • Archiste offers a list of notes including sesame seed cinnamon oregano clove cumin night jasmine smoked chili Mexican vanilla and cacao. The cacao is there from the start. The opening is the most spicy and hot part: cacao cinnamon and a touch of chili like a hot drink with dark chocolate and spices. Although the website lists oregano I don’t detect it. Then the heat fades and a quiet incense-like smoky scent rises. After a few hours it smells like dark chocolate over that smoky base; the spices are diluted but the spice still pops up occasionally. Finally after several hours it becomes sweeter with vanilla present but not dominant while the smoke and cacao remain as if sugar and vanilla were added to the earlier drink. It’s not a drastic change more of a linear evolution from the second phase but noticeable. Good performance; it lasts eight hours on the skin without issues. It doesn’t seem powerful at first but it’s not weak. Ideal for cold climates and more of a nighttime perfume. It sounds more masculine to me that spicy dark chocolate scent with smoke. Personal opinion: I liked it but it didn’t steal my heart. It’s good the notes are quality and the performance is correct but I’ve smelled similar perfumes before like California Chocolate by Olympic Orchids or Belgian Choco Truffle by Dua Fragrances. The scent itself is original and I recommend it to dark chocolate lovers but having smelled it before it feels a bit tiresome. Plus it’s very linear and the chocolatey scent ends up getting tiring after so many hours. Good perfume? Yes. But not for me.

  • Let’s start by listing the notes appearing on the Archiste website: Top notes: Sesame seed cinnamon and oregano. Heart notes: Clove cumin night jasmine and smoked chili infusion (anchovies guajillo and chipotle). Base notes: Mexican vanilla cacao absolute and chypre-oriental accord. The cacao note is present from start to finish so starting from that base I’ll try to convey the main differences I noticed in its evolution. The opening is the most spicy and hot part of its development. You feel the cacao alongside the cinnamon and the spicy touch of the chili infusion. It would be something like a hot cacao drink with spicy spices and pieces of dark chocolate on top. While the website lists oregano as a top note I did not detect any herbal nuance. Gradually the spicy and hot effect attenuates and a smoky scent similar to incense gains presence carving out a space without making much noise. After a few hours the perfume smells like dark chocolate but without detaching from that underlying smoky tone. The spices are quite diluted though you can still appreciate that spicy nuance occasionally. In the final dry-down after several hours the perfume becomes slightly sweeter with more vanilla appreciated here but never reaching dominance. The cacao and smoke remain present but it’s as if sugar and vanilla were added to the initial spicy hot drink. It’s not a drastic change; rather I’d say that from the second phase to the end the perfume becomes quite linear but I can perceive that slight difference. Good performance. It can easily last eight hours on the skin and be worn without issues. At first it gives the impression that it won’t be overly powerful but it doesn’t fall short either. Better for cold climates and I see it more as a nighttime perfume. It feels more masculine to me. That spicy dark chocolate scent with smoke seems more suited to male skin. But as I always say that’s very personal. Personal opinion: although I liked it it didn’t steal my heart so to speak. I believe the perfume is undoubtedly good; I perceive the notes as quality and the performance is good but the main problem is that I’ve already smelled similar (though not identical) perfumes before such as California Chocolate and Seattle Chocolate by Olympic Orchids Belgian Choco Truffle by Dua Fragrances or Ore by Slumberhouse. The scent itself is original and I recommend it totally to those who like the dark chocolate scent but personally having already smelled something similar it feels a bit tiresome to me. Also it feels too linear for much of its development and smelling that chocolatey scent for so many hours eventually gets tiring. Good perfume? Yes. But not for me.
