To do justice to this classic, we have to admit it’s a benchmark amber, a reference in the genre. I wish I could try the unreformulated juice, but that’s what we have. I love the opening; the lavender is noticeable for just a few seconds before melting perfectly with the myrrh and the rest of the balsamic notes. It’s hard to distinguish the ingredients; everything is blended with mastery. It doesn’t evolve; stays linear until the dry down. It’s pleasant, warm, but quite soft—a skin scent. Being so linear with a shy performance, it feels a bit boring compared to other greats like Ambre Fetiche, Ambre Sultan, or Ambre Doré, but it has earned its respect and is worth trying. On my skin it lasts 7–8 hours, a skin scent, noticeable up close, with a weak but perceptible sillage. Rating: 7/10

It works well for me. Opens floral with lavender, then turns sweet and resinous with lots of vanilla and Peru & Tolu balsams. There’s a dirty touch, maybe nutmeg, incense, or leather. In the dry down it leans gourmand but doesn’t cross the line. Hard to dislike; reminded me of Ambre 114. Perfect for fall, winter, and night. Lasts a long time with moderate sillage.
