  It’s the ideal companion for days when you need a little extra comfort stepping out like wearing your favorite freshly washed coat. For others you project an endearing confidence. It smells clean and tight straight to the heart like first love with impeccable soap elegance and bomb-proof virility—no less than Tarzan’s. It dresses better in the cold and works for any time of day. I don’t use it for special dates since I prefer sweeter scents for those but it conveys security and charm if you do. I think this Ulric adds that personal touch that makes the day more beautiful. Its main cocktail is nutmeg dried orange peel and fresh flowers that I sense as red geraniums all with superb cleanliness. If you want an idea remember Diavolo by Benetton a cologne I like though this Ulric is less sweet and playful more comforting deep and reflective with impressive mastery of soap and woods. It’s a man’s scent the kind that cares about doing things right so everyone wins. Clean virile deep and endearing.

  Mr. Ulric Viellard born in Besançon in 1947 is now 72 and firmly in charge of his perfume brand. He owns his own stores in France and sells at major retailers. It seems he was born destined for wealth; his first name Ulric comes from the Germanic Odalric meaning ‘prosperity and power’ while his surname Varens of Danish origin points to ‘goods’. The Danish connection is a mystery but setting that aside: if you haven’t heard of Fahrenheit by Dior give this Varens Homme Intense a try. I’m not exaggerating when I say it smells the same or almost the same. Sometimes I get called a ‘piradillo’ for comparing but Fahrenheit has lost some punch and drifts toward supermarket scents whereas this Varens Intense is accessible. I adore the combo of violets rubber leather and gasoline in Fahrenheit and this one shares that same spirit with a touch of nutmeg and a well-balanced hint of cumin so it doesn’t smell like sweat. It also carries that Iso E Super vibe—volatile body scent somewhere between ether chloroform and alpine menthol. It’s not a great perfume and doesn’t last long but I love its single-minded aroma with no surprises. It’s perfect for daytime: work gym bar park even church. It’s a bit short for night though if you apply it generously it could work for a party. It’s not niche but it’s ideal for modest budgets that want to smell good without smelling like a citrus bath cologne. Everyone deserves an affordable fragrance and this Varens Intense could be that one.
