  • I bought it right after trying it at Douglas, the only place I’ve seen it. Don’t fall for the trap of thinking it’s a standard citrus; it’s pure incense after an orange opening that lasts seconds. I bought it for the incense, I like it, it’s subtle and reminds me of the dry down of Armaf Shaghaf Abyad (without being the same). I found it at a reasonable price, but the 45 euros asked in stores for 50ml places it in a market it doesn’t belong in. Pleasant, yes, but for use at home, since it has no projection and the development after a few seconds is linear but pretty.

A marvel from this French house by Jean-Claude Ellena, creator of masterpieces like Terre d’Hermès or Bigarade Concentrée. For this great perfume, he teamed up with nose Barbara Zoebel, who took a step forward with Soleil de Lalique. It opens with an excelsa orange, sweet and slightly bitter, a powerful gourmand opening. That warm sweetness is maintained by the artemisia, a winning combination. The incense is present, not excessively smoky or invasive; it adds a touch of mystery and depth. It’s a Western composition. For me, the benzoin is the protagonist, with a very present vanilla character in the heart and dry down. An extraordinary benzoin. The house is undervalued, with quality that touches niche perfumery. Magnificent bottle. I see it as unisex with a feminine lean. Everyone wears what they want. Apply moderately, it has good performance.

  • A very pleasant blend of benzoin, orange, and incense, with well-defined and quality notes, typical of this ‘private’ line by Jean-Claude Ellena. A bit linear, but always pleasant. Note: these aren’t party or night fragrances; the projection is scarce (it’s for personal enjoyment) and the longevity is average if you pump it, otherwise regular leaning towards poor. Along with Fort Royal, it’s the one I like most from the line. If you catch it on sale, it’s a good buy, as I find it too pricey at the original price for what it offers.

  • What a delight! I smell woody notes, no aggressive oud, just a gentle and super pleasant incense. It delivers a lot. I see it as unisex with a masculine lean; if you wear it, people notice and most like it. Exquisite trail and long-lasting: about 7 hours on skin, up to 10 hours on clothes, and easy to last a full day. I’d buy it again, yes!

  • Opening is orange sweetened by benzoin, almost edible, like candied orange peel. I detect the smoky aftertaste of incense and a herbal touch from davana that adds depth. Over time, the incense gains weight, but it’s sweet and light. Once settled, it’s linear: candied orange, smoky, and herbal. Initial projection is good, but after 5 minutes it becomes discreet, projecting a bubble for 12 hours. Deliciously sweet and smoky to the right point, unisex, cold weather, day and night. Ideal for casual outings. In my collection it’s redundant, but I’d buy it for sure. Pleasant: 8/10, Interesting: 8/10, Versatile: 5/10, Original: 7/10.

Smells rich, but if you’re looking for a classic men’s scent, this isn’t for you. Forget woods, barbershop vibes, or citrus; here, incense takes over with a vanilla-leaning dry down, ideal for cold weather. It sounds like a thousand others, zero innovation. I gifted it to a friend because it felt too feminine to me. 6/10.

  • Vegan perfume by Le Couvent, under the baton of legendary Jean-Claude Ellena. Porto Bello seems simple: orange and incense, inspired by the Panama Bay. It starts fruity and dries down dry with resin. It smells super masculine, mature, intense, and elegant, with a woody and sweet base that’s magical, especially in the dry down (reminds me of Loewe 7 Anonimo, just there). I don’t detect oud or tobacco despite what the community says. I love it, it makes me feel good, projects just right, and lasts over 7 hours. As always, try it before buying.
