One of the best I’ve tried after Cacharel’s Nemo disappeared. Later, I tried Must Essence without ever buying it—I don’t know why, since it was discontinued and is now hard to find. My attention shifted to the softer version of Must, but that was also discontinued, and honestly, the anise note didn’t suit me. Must Essence was much better, excellent.
This flanker of Must keeps the anise touch of the original but much softer. A grapefruit opening adds a particular freshness, brief but perfect with the spices: rich cinnamon, exotic, and ginger to a lesser extent, less juicy. It moves into the heart with a very balanced and pleasant result, making this combo the most striking and interesting part of Essence. The woods close the dry-down: cedar, a touch of patchouli, and vetiver that add warmth and a soft sweetness. Everything is well-measured for versatility. The longevity is good, and the light projection makes this facet more desirable. It’s not a masterpiece, but an underrated fragrance; Essence is a pleasant and seductive proposal from Cartier. Rating: 6.
Wow, writing this in 2024 about this amazing perfume, haha. I have both: Must Pour Homme EDT and Essence. The difference is that Essence has a less citrusy opening and feels denser than its EDT sibling. The EDT has that lovely green mandarin note at the start, but once they settle, they smell identical. Just a heads-up: it’s a personal scent with no wide sillage. It’s no secret that it’s discontinued and super hard to find. Hopefully, Cartier releases an EDP version of this gem someday. Its weak point is the sillage, but that doesn’t stop it from being a delight to wear.
I own this and it’s top-tier. I’ve had it since the early 2000s. It’s so potent that even without applying it, the scent lingers in your nose.
