Roja wanted to capture the soul of its country in Great Britain: elegance, manners, parliament, and the Queen. Did it achieve the goal? The opening is wet, smoky leather that dominates, with flowers and wood at the base. It’s very polished, with no sharp edges or synthetics, nothing powdery, all in a classic cut. A sweetness accompanies it, and the flowers blend so well they’re hard to identify. It’s linear, with good performance and versatility. It has echoes of Chanel’s Cuir de Russie and Dior’s Cuir Cannage, but it’s lighter and more refined; structurally they may resemble each other, but in aroma and quality, Roja would lecture both. The leather is the protagonist and the note is fantastic, a true representative of the genre. I’d put it in my top 5 of leathers alongside M by Puredistance; forget Tuscan Leather, which has no place here. Understand, it’s high perfumery: GB will transport you to another era. Imagine your father’s or grandfather’s study, the leather armchair where he spent hours, the smell of a briefcase, the wide armchairs where you’d wait with good manners, when life was simpler. Recall those black-and-white and color photos of your grandfather looking well-dressed, with dedications in his own handwriting to his great love in the corner. All that panorama framed with flowers and a softening sweetness. If you don’t identify with this, don’t waste time sniffing it, simply it’s not for you. Almost forgot the price: US$1,750 for 100 ml. I know it’s hard to swallow. Nostalgia and my description might convince you, not the price, and I don’t blame you. If you have the money, pay for it; if not, follow your path. I paid for it, and it was marvelous. ✨
Roja wanted to bottle the essence of its country with ‘Great Britain’: elegance, manners, parliament, and the Queen. Did it achieve the goal? The opening is dirty, smoky leather that commands attention, with flowers and a woody base. It’s very polished and refined; nothing bothersome, nothing stings, and nothing smells synthetic. No powder or talc, all in a classic cut. A sweetness accompanies it, and the flowers blend so well they’re hard to identify. It’s linear, with good performance and versatility. It has echoes of Chanel’s Cuir de Russie (classic floral leather) and recalls Dior’s Cuir Cannage, but it’s heavier and more difficult. Structurally they may resemble each other, but in aroma and quality, Roja would lecture both. Here, the leather is the protagonist and the note is fantastic. It’s a true representative of the leather genre. I’d put it in my top 5 of best leathers alongside M by Puredistance; forget Tuscan Leather, which has no place here. Understand, this is high perfumery, mate. GB will take you back to another era. Very powdery leather. Vintage. Retro elegance. It’s very intense. Great sillage and longevity. I’m sticking with Estée Lauder’s Beautiful…
Mmm, it caught me off guard, but not in a bad way. The fault is mine; forget it’s called ‘Roja’, it smells like Roja. It has things I absolutely love (Danger is one of my favorites) and others, like this one, where I just don’t fit. In my hunt for the Holy Grail of leathers, I finally got a decant of this GB; it intrigued me… and it’s not what I expected. I imagined something like Cuir de Russie: elegant but serious, more animalistic, a stronger and smokier leather (I don’t detect the chypre, but there’s a very marked aldehydic note), meaning something else entirely. Yes, you can smell the leather, but ultimately, that’s what I like most; before that comes something very floral, a lot (especially iris, rose, violet, jasmine), very unisex (for me, even feminine). It feels very vintage, but the kind Chanel No. 5 has (which I hate) or Cuir Cannage, another leather that smells like an old lady to me (sacrilege, people will think!). Is it elegant? Yes, it smells like old-school prestige, perhaps, but also like an 80s perfume, and as I said, too unisex for my taste. Maybe it’s a masterpiece, but it’s not my style. If I want an old-school floral leather, etc., I’d stick with Chanel’s Cuir de Russie or Knize Ten long before this.
