Eau D'Hermès by Hermès is a leather fragrance created for men and women. Launched in 1951, the nose behind this composition is Edmond Roudnitska. The top notes include bergamot, lavender, lemon, petit grain, and sage; the heart notes feature cardamom, cinnamon, cumin, bourbon geranium, jasmine, coriander, and cloves; and the base notes reveal leather, birch, sandalwood, cedar, moss, tonka bean, vanilla, and labdanum.

Along with Montale’s Aoud Cuir d’Arabie and Serge Lutens’ Muscs Koublai Khan, it’s the worst fragrance I’ve tried. It’s repulsive, I’m sorry, but that’s how it smells to me. Eau D’Hermès is a mythical classic, but to my nose, it smells something ‘fecal’. It’s excessively musky. I absolutely do not recommend it, although as they say, taste is in the eye of the beholder.
Horrible, strong, and horrible. It’s not the worst I’ve smelled, but definitely one of the worst.
I understand civeta used to dominate with a fecal touch, but in this version (black cap), it’s barely noticeable. The cumin is there, but no sweat. It’s soft, versatile, and unisex. On my skin, it smells like spiced and creamy leather, almost gourmand. I was surprised that, besides leather, it seems like chai tea with custard. The notes are: cardamom, cinnamon, clove, vanilla, tonka bean, and a very milky sandalwood. It’s a discreet and comforting leather that, though skin-scented, lasts at least 8 hours (impressive for an EDT). I enjoy it immensely.
