  • I didn’t like this Byredo perfume much. The opening promised powerful leather and plum, but minutes later that spectacularity calmed down and the leather was barely noticeable. In the dry-down, what I smelled most was the plum and osmanthus, which smelled like peach. The leather from the opening was almost imperceptible. I couldn’t detect the other notes individually. As for performance, it also didn’t seem very good: it stayed pretty much right on the skin most of the time, although the longevity is acceptable.

I’ve been testing Byredo for years, and within its price range, it’s one of the worst. The blends and quality leave no impression, and often the sillage is minimal. It sounds weird because I’m a customer, but aside from Bal d’Afrique, Gypsy Water, and Blanche—which I absolutely love despite the price—the rest seems overpriced with very basic presence for what they charge. If I go beyond their basics, I’d rather choose Chanel Exclusifs or Elixir. This Bullion came out before the brand’s boom, when its minimalist Nordic aesthetic had already infected even candle companies, inflating prices with those beige Goop-style figurines. It’s a cold fragrance: a sweet plum puree with a trace of cornstarch and a prominent osmanthus that dominates everything, with a fruity and spicy brightness. I don’t smell the leather on its own, even though I’m looking for it, because what there is is a cloying mix of plum and osmanthus with a dirty sweetness that reminds me of a Pacific summer lotion with tiare and monoi. Strangely, all of this turns into a metallic but dirty accord, like used coins or mosquito netting. The longevity isn’t bad for such heavy notes, but the sillage is low and it projects very little from the start. It’s already discontinued.
