Duel by Goutal

I’ve been wearing this for two weeks and still can’t quite find its sweet spot. I was expecting something else because I didn’t find the leather note that intrigued me so much. What jumps out is an acidic yet delicious lemon, super fresh, like fruit from a homegrown tree. After forty minutes, the acidity fades and green, herbal notes emerge—intense but delicate. At first, it smells very masculine, but over time it becomes unisex. Towards the end, it almost disappears, maybe with a woody base I don’t notice clearly. I like it; it’s not a repetitive scent and lasts longer than its poor projection suggests. On the wrist, it feels distant at first, then drops to about 10 cm, but last night I wore it before dinner, and at 8 AM today, you could still smell it by pressing your nose close. Totally worth trying.

I totally agree with the previous comments. It’s an interesting and recommended fragrance. I perceive it as green and masculine, smoky, cozy, and relaxing. Ideal for mild spring and summer days or evenings, but it suffers from very short longevity. After two hours, you have to hold your nose very close to smell it. Like others, I feel I paid too much for that lack of staying power. I own the EDT, but I discovered they also sell the EDP, which lasts twice as long and costs more. I’d recommend the EDP for autumn, though it might still be a bit short in winter. My advice: if your budget allows, go for the EDP.

Duel is a masterpiece in concept and theory, great in aroma but disastrous in performance. I’m not sure if I bought it during a reformulation, but I don’t believe it’s subtle on purpose. It’s too volatile, weak, and ephemeral—almost a scam that negates its virtues. It fades in half an hour and disappears by ninety minutes. The scent is pleasant, versatile, and clearly unisex, with hints of freshness, sweetness, herbs, musk, and leather, but everything feels washed out and diluted. It doesn’t smell like yerba mate as we know it in Argentina, but rather like black tea, perhaps due to the petit grain it claims to have. It’s not a mate-exclusive perfume but combined with other notes that dilute everything. There’s confusion online about whether it contains absolute mate or just petitgrain; the liquid is crystal clear, so it doesn’t seem to be an absolute. Scent: 7.5/10, Sillage: 3/10, Longevity: 3/10, Versatility: 8/10.

For me, it’s a work of art. Herbal notes with a sweet touch that many people associate with mate. The leather note is super soft and wonderful. A complex and timeless perfume. One of the few I always feel like wearing, in any circumstance. The problem is the longevity, which doesn’t last more than 4-5 hours and quickly stays very close to the skin, perhaps too close. In my opinion, it’s a must-have and a true masterpiece of perfumery. Very natural, high quality, and well-balanced. As I said, essential.

I read the reviews and decided to try it, but honestly, it didn’t hook me. It smells weird, nothing sensual, more like tea with leather. It brings back memories of leather shops. If you like the scent, be careful, the longevity is minimal.

For me, everything revolves around this small South American woody tree, and it’s obvious that it surprises others. Duel is a very special fragrance that needs time and patience to be appreciated, but it stands out once you wear it. I reiterate its elegance, naturalness, and innate seductive power. One could say it attracts attention and surprises at the same time; it’s a very good niche piece.

My comment is based on the fragrance once it’s developed. It has undeclared notes like tea and an incense-tobacco blend. I’d say it’s not inferior to other Annick Goutal masculines; it’s simply different in its olfactory proposal. I’d highlight the good work of their noses in the combination and proportion of notes. They achieve surprising effects. It doesn’t have low longevity; when its sillage decreases, the fragrance hits you at the first gust of wind, and the next day it lingers in your memory. Of course, it depends on pH and how it works for you. It’s a perfume that moves away from traditional canons and, while very elegant, reflects a personal personality and a declared sensuality. It contains a magical holly that is extremely natural, and the tea gives a nice relaxation. Its soft leather is a co-protagonist, and the rest of the notes play their role perfectly. Certainly, it’s not oriental, citrus, marine, floral, spicy, or wood-based; I think Duel is unique and intransferible, and there’s no label where to place it. A niche perfume without a doubt.

To me, it smells like holly and leather, wrapped in Iso E and guaiac wood. Unlike other leathers that are warm, this one has freshness, like when you approach a piece of cold leather against your skin. It’s a unique sensation that’s hard to replicate. Plus, the soft musk creates a cloud that envelops you like a light second skin, without overwhelming you. It’s original, masterful, classy, and full of style. It lasts well on my skin, though the trail is soft and stays close to the skin quickly, which is typical for Goutal.

This is a genuine Duel. The star duo is leather and musk, while the rest of the notes act as a supportive chorus. Its sensuality is elegant and refined, very much in the style of Annick Goutal, who always bets on quality essential oils and exclusivity. It’s not cheap, but it’s a soft, wearable masculine scent for summer. It has that fine leather note that doesn’t weigh you down and a trail that lasts a long time without being intrusive.

Definitely, this essence belongs to the line of sexual perfumes. Its potent skin note alters whoever perceives it; you receive uncomfortable looks and indecorous advances. Plus, it has a lasting trail. It’s a fine, special sexual weapon that every man should have up his sleeve.
