Exquisite, a jewel for lovers of woody and floral scents. Closing your eyes feels like traveling to an old bazaar with varnished woods and velvety roses, where the bitterness of neroli gives character to that sweetness. There might be a hidden incense that adds depth. It’s worth stopping to discover and letting it evolve on your skin; it’s casual yet elegant and distinguished.
My first great love in niche perfumery. I tried it at the perfumery of the Hotel Alfonso XIII in Seville, a corner full of authentic jewels. Since it was my first time and I didn’t know where to start, the salesperson recommended several, but insisted I try 1888, her favorite. I suppose my father, who always used barbershop perfumes, passed that taste on to me. It’s the cleanest and most special scent I’ve ever tried. The quality is indescribable and it lasts days on clothes. It might not be the best of all, but it’s my favorite and I reserve it for special occasions.

It’s simply a diluted version of DATES DELIGHT by HOO. Nothing more.
Spectacular composition, a masterpiece that leaves me speechless. But watch out, it’s not perfect: it lacks quite a bit in performance, projection, and longevity. I guess it’s flawed since it doesn’t match what others say here. Incredible scent, but what a shame about the performance.
Perfume surprises us. When I sprayed 1888 on my skin, I saw my father, who passed away years ago and never knew this fragrance. He’s not the only one; Prada’s Amber also brings him to mind, even though they don’t resemble each other. Both have a vintage vibe, very pronounced in 1888, dominated by a non-vanillic amber, tempered by the minty freshness of birch and a bouquet of neroli and rose. If you get too close, there’s a slightly dirty note that disappears when you step back. My father used gallons of Floyd Balm and Haugroquina, a precursor to layering in his own way. 1888 brings back those balsamic Floyd sensations with a touch of Haugroquina, elevated to niche level—less intense but equally masculine and elegant, modernized. It’s a classic everywhere.

After a week, it’s a fantastic fragrance: addictive, unique, and elegant. It feels floral, sweet, and earthy—a blend of fougère and ambered floral. It opens with green carnation, pepper, and coriander, almost citrusy due to the neroli, over a subtle sweet base of amber. In the heart, a soft, spiced, and woody rose that is very pleasant. The dry down features that earthy green rose with woods. It’s a total blast. It evokes the 19th century. I love it and it never gets boring. Ideal for mature people with a developed sense of smell, for dressing up. Timeless. Excellent longevity, trail, and projection. Scent 9.5/10, Trail 9/10, Longevity 9/10, Projection 9/10.
1888 surprises on the first sniff with that spicy opening of pepper and saffron. I discovered it in Milan and it went from dry on my skin to causing pure joy. However, months later, when I tried it again, the opening hit my nose hard with a penetrating scent that tasted chemical and medicinal, slowly becoming enveloping and heavy. It has a huge trail and lasts 8 hours on the skin, projecting for the first 4, but then stays intimate with a mark. Throughout the evolution, the perception changes: it becomes heavy and cloying with its ambered, sweet patchouli base, a result of the combination with Ylang-Ylang that comes and goes. That’s where it stalls; it doesn’t evolve. My memory is a pit. Regrettable and definitely dropping it from my list.
Testing a 2 ml sample, it’s a vintage fragrance. At first, it didn’t grab my attention; it has a medicinal and old-barbershop opening. As minutes passed, I started feeling great, thinking about how good it smelled and how different it is. I felt like a 19th-century nobleman, transported to another era, unique and distinct. I added it to my wishlist and think I’ll buy it for my birthday at the end of autumn. It’s like that old Rolls, Jaguar, or Bentley you never imagined driving, until one day you get behind the wheel and are surprised by how much you like it, its nobility, character, and exclusivity. You never imagined it would be your best road companion.
