The name Ramon Monegal is not only a niche perfume brand from Barcelona. It symbolizes Spanish perfumery since his family founded the iconic Myrurgia in 1916. His family was responsible for historical fragrances such as Embrujo de Sevilla, Sospiro de Granada and Maderas de Oriente. The Monegal family therefore represents a long tradition in perfumery.
Born in 1951 in Barcelona, Ramón Monegal comes from the most outstanding family of perfumers in Spain, the founders of Myrurgia, who were appointed suppliers to the Spanish Royal House. As a “fourth-generation nose,” Ramón followed in his family’s footsteps and began his training in 1972, focusing on perfecting infusions of ambergris, tonka bean, musk, castoreum, civet and iris. He continued his education in Geneva under the direction of master perfumer Artur Jordi Pey (of Firmenich), in Grasse with Marcel Carles and in Paris with Pierre Bourdon (of Takasago and Fragrance Resources). Ramón also fostered his fascination with design, architecture and the conceptualization of science and art by studying architecture at the Barcelona Design Centre in 1977.
Ramón Monegal’s first successful fragrance was created for Myrurgia in 1979. He spent decades creating scents for other perfume houses until, in 2007, he fulfilled his dream of founding his own brand. In 2009, after 40 years in the perfume industry, Ramón Monegal launched his first collection under his eponymous perfume house based in Barcelona. This company gave him total creative freedom and allowed him to connect directly with the public. Ramón Monegal’s perfumes reflect his belief in the importance of artisanal methods and creativity without restrictions to elevate perfume to the level of art.
In his workshop, Ramón Monegal combines, macerates and maintains total control over the production of his fragrances, focusing on his main inspiration: literature. He describes his process as “turning words into notes, phrases into chords and stories into compositions.” His love of words is evident in the distinctive bottle he designed for his perfume house, which resembles an old-fashioned inkwell with a hinged lid.
Ramón Monegal’s creations are steeped in Spanish passion, the sun and his family’s history in perfumery. Many of his compositions allude to his story and personal experiences. For example, Fiesta was launched to celebrate the 100 years of the Monegal family in fragrances, while his love for the sunlit island inspired his Ibiza collection. Ramón Monegal’s architectural training is also reflected in La Isla Blanca, a tribute to his time as a student and his admiration for the white buildings of Ibiza.
