Luca Maffei
The perfumer of Italian origin Luca Maffei is the creative force behind Atelier Fragranze Milano. As he grew up in a family deeply rooted in the fragrance industry, Maffei’s passion for aromas was nurtured from an early age. Since then, he has become a skilled independent perfumer, working with numerous prestigious brands and gaining international recognition for his creations.
The son of the fragrance executive Marco Maffei, Luca was surrounded by aromas from an early age. His father worked for both Symrise and International Flavors and Fragrances, exposing the young Luca to laboratory samples and meetings with renowned perfumers such as Dominique Ropion and Michel Almairac. This upbringing sparked Luca’s fascination with raw materials and the mysterious alchemy of fragrance creation.
Initially following a career on the commercial side of the fragrance industry, Maffei soon realized that his true calling lay in the creative realm of perfumery. To deepen his passion, he traveled to Grasse, the world’s capital of perfume, to study with Madame Françoise Marin, former director of the Roure perfumery school. After being an apprentice of Vincent Ricord, Maffei began working closely with master perfumer Maurizio Cerizza, who encouraged him to compete in The Scent of Excellence Contest at Esxence. Luca Maffei’s proposal, Iris Magnifica, made it into the top five finalists.
When he launched Atelier Fragranze Milano, Luca Maffei became a member of the Société Française des Parfumeurs (SFP) in 2014. Since then, he has created more than 50 perfumes for both commercial and niche brands, as well as fragrance atmospherics and candles. Maffei’s creations, Black Pepper & Sandalwood by Acca Kappa and Néa by JUL ET MAD Paris, won the Independent Category at the Art and Olfaction Awards in 2015 and 2016 in Los Angeles.
Maffei has collaborated with a wide range of brands, including Acca Kappa, Aedes de Venustas, Alyssa Ashley, Carthusia, Histoires de Parfums, Jul et Mad Paris and Perris Monte Carlo, to name a few. Some of his most popular perfumes include Masque Milano L'Attesa, Jul et Mad Paris Néa, Histoires de Parfums This Is Not A Blue Bottle 1.2, Carthusia Terra Mia and Perris Monte Carlo Rose de Taif.
Maffei’s unique approach to perfume creation stems from his childhood fascination with raw materials and the alchemy of aromas. His innate curiosity and passion for exploration have led him to develop a diverse and captivating portfolio.
