Carven Vetiver: my dad’s (rest in peace) favorite fragrance. When he wore it back in the 80s, it was a total hit, just like aquatic or spicy scents are today. It was a magnet for women back then, even though it’s from 1957. Everyone at home loved its powerful sillage; in fact, my mom used to put it on us for school when we were little. I vaguely remember the olfactory profile, but it was a fascinating, fresh, and not heavy scent, with a very pleasant decongesting effect upon application. Citrus and woody notes dominate; it’s delightful from start to finish. If I could go back in time, I’d bring cash and buy 3 or 4 100ml bottles. That’s how good I consider it. Scent: 9/10, Longevity: 9/10, Projection: 9/10, Price: 9/10.

I tested the 50ml version on a trip to the south of the country and found the bottle with the wooden cap. I also tried the old 5ml Guerlain edition. Both were fabulous: woody close to the skin and myrrh, which is my favorite. Now I see that both have changed presentation, not sure if they are the same. At Guerlain I bought a 200ml and now it smells more like cigar with vetiver; it’s still good, but I preferred the old one, didn’t know they had reformulated it. 🙁 I managed to buy the bottle with the wooden cap and an earlier one marked W7 3SA on the bottle; its aroma is stronger. Of course, both are super.

The version I have is the full green box, the one before the wooden cap. At first, I sensed a strong resemblance to Guerlain’s vintage Vetiver: powdery, floral, with soft citrus. In the dry down, the flowers and iris root stand out alongside the vetiver. The finish reminded me of the current Guerlain version, with soft musk and myrrh, oakmoss, and cedar. It’s a vetiver very close to the Guerlain style (starting like the vintage and drying down like the current one), but softer, with moderate sillage and longevity over twelve hours, staying close to the skin. Ideal for daytime and heat.

A classy classic with the right bitter edge and an earthy touch that works. Consistent projection and longevity. The citrus opening is fresh and energizing, perfect for this time of year. Smells great and exudes a high-end vibe. Sage, cedar, and sandalwood do a fantastic job without overshadowing the vetiver, which comes out green, delicate, and almost powdery. You can find similar vibes in other brands, but Carven is top-tier. If you love these scents, this is a valid option to feel elegant and modern at the same time.

Today I picked this up blind because I imagined a different scent. It doesn’t smell bad, I just thought it would be fresher. However, that bitter note really stands out. I don’t think Raimond and the masses will wear this, so it works well for me, even though I expected more freshness; for that, I’ll stick with Paco Rabanne, Azzaro, or Swiss Army from my usual rotation. That said, it’s not for a young crowd.

Well, as I mentioned, I work at a fish market. I put on the Vetiver at 6 am and it was still detectable at 5 pm! It’s incredibly potent. Imagine smelling like sardines all day, and nearly 11 hours later, you can still smell bitter wood on your t-shirt collar. It makes you feel manly and virile. Scent: 8/10, Longevity: 10/10, Sillage: 7/10, Price: 10/10.
