Carven L’Eau Intense has nothing to do with current trends; from its DNA, it’s coherent with the brand’s philosophy: a surreal, high-energy style like Dali’s work or David Bowie’s ‘Loving the Alien.’ Rising from a powdery base with ambered and birch accords is a citrus mint reminiscent of early 20th-century French seaside dandies. It brings an elegant nostalgia from the past to the present; the top citrus notes settle over dry mint and an ambered vegetal touch, making it sober and white as its bottle, with a modern but classic twist. Its elegance escapes modern baroque excesses; it’s far from things like Allure Blanche Edition. The bottle’s sobriety seems like a call against today’s visual and olfactory pollution; its content is a postcard from August 1909 in Monaco. Applying it takes you on a trip from present to past: sailing ships, sailors, ladies with parasols, a man drinking a martini in a white suit. It seems Jerome Di Marino and Francis Kurkdjian entered the time tunnel to return 108 years later with this Eau Intense and a bottle of Pernod Absinthe. Not recommended if you’re looking for something seductive or complimentary, but its uniqueness and performance (10+) are a plus. It works perfectly on hot or mild days, from informal to daytime formal, for any age. The only detail is the price, which is due to the quality of its extracts. Undoubtedly, L’Eau was David Bowie’s choice for ‘Life on Mars’. Different and bold, it was a great surprise to me.
A truly clean, fresh, and aromatic proposal, well-composed, with interesting projection and decent longevity. Mint, lavender, and woody notes dominate. It feels a bit synthetic, but nothing unpleasant; it’s modern with roots in the past. Hot days are ideal for wearing this creation, which plays with the contrast between icy freshness and spice, plus the intensity of spices and woods, offering a surprising and different olfactory sensation. Carven proves to be a quality house.
I didn’t like it. Honestly, I expected more. It’s a fresh combination with woody and slightly dirty spicy nuances that, in my opinion, don’t sit well together. Also, I think the quality and performance could be significantly better.
The fragrance isn’t bad at all. It starts with sharp citrus, mint, and ginger, then turns slightly spicy; it reminded me a lot of the opening of Burberry Brit (thanks to the citrus and ginger). I didn’t like the dry-down on skin; it leaves a dish soap vibe, very similar to Bogart Silver Scent, though it smells great in the air. It’s a mix of 90s fragrances with a modern touch, like if Polo Sport had a kid with Lacoste Blanc. Amidst the herbal and citrus notes, a sweet, woody fruity note emerges. Regarding the performance they claim is amazing: I’d say it’s moderate; about 7 hours on skin and projection of a couple of meters for the first two hours. Scent 9, Longevity 7, Projection 7, Sillage 7, Price 10.
I only tested it on four different spots, so this is my mental take. It’ll be my last fragrance of the year because, with COVID, you can’t really show off, and after a year of obsessively trying everything, I’m just tired of the excess. I was curious to compare it to Brit and that Dandis du XXe review. You can definitely smell the ginger, which gives it a clean, relaxed vibe; I don’t know if anyone’s ever tasted pure ginger, but it’s a fresh, spicy flavor—good for breath and antiseptic, quite a kick. It doesn’t smell like Brit, but rather ginger with some citrus and maybe mint (nothing like my favorite, Parma Colonia Club). It reminds me of a relaxing, busy stroll through a plaza in Tijuana, sunny and laid-back. I think it’s perfect for a casual summer walk, even daily or with your girlfriend. Next summer, first things first, God willing, without distancing or masks, I’ll test it more and let you know.
