In magical Mexican markets like San Juan de Dios in Guadalajara, lost treasures are hidden. I found an old Michael for Men (the predecessor to the current one) for 800 pesos. It smells like spicy tobacco that sweetens into something exquisite and elegant. The seller said it’s seductive for dressing up. Now I collect classics like Opium, Kouros, or Guerlain Mojito. If I won the lottery, I’d buy perfumes. This vintage is a must-buy blind purchase.

A distinct style: starts with dirty, resinous, herbal tobacco, which is a bit shocking. The magic happens when it dries down: the scent softens, classic fruity patchouli emerges. It’s the opposite of Sauvage Vintage; one is citrusy, this one is oriental and fougère. In short, the performance is perfect; I give it a 10 across the board.

Liquid masculine art: I bought the vintage 2001 Michael Kors blind and nailed it. It’s orthodox and serious, though the opening is a bit plain; the magic happens as it dries. I get bitter-sweet plum and fantastic tobacco, without the honeyed sweetness of others. I can’t isolate the cinnamon, but it’s potent. It lasts hours on the skin with moderate sillage. It’s more nocturnal and autumnal, with a regal bottle. Warning: it’s sharp as a white-knife. Disadvantage: discontinued and hard to find. Perfect for a collection—it makes us feel proud and even betrays our usual scent. 9/10.

Upon application, I smelled tobacco, plum, and nuts. It reminded me of an old cologne from years ago. Initially, it seemed a bit boozy, but after two hours, the liquor-like sensation faded, leaving a slightly powdery trail. I detected suede, patchouli, and anise, but no incense. The tobacco was strong yet sweet and soft. While it’s not generic, I don’t see it as very innovative. I wear it any time except extreme heat. Lasts 12 hours with moderate projection. A good fragrance to try, but I wouldn’t recommend it blind or place it in my top 10. Maybe it lacks a wood note like cedar to be more elegant.

What a beautiful scent: warm, semi-sweet, and fruity, blending tobacco, incense, and suede perfectly for romance. The strong opening of star anise and spices flows into an intense heart that softens with sandalwood and fruits. Despite the sweetness, it’s very masculine. I tried the 2001 and 2014 versions; the first has more tobacco, while the second is milder with more incense. Both last longer than usual and are ideal for cold-weather dates. If you like Opium or Egoiste, this is your modern oriental take.

It’s been a while since a fragrance loved me like this, thanks to its strong tobacco opening that reminded me of Roger & Gallet’s Open, but sweet, with cardamom, cinnamon, bergamot, and star anise. Then comes the tobacco with power and suede. I didn’t detect the incense, perhaps overshadowed by the rest. In the dry down, there’s residual tobacco with patchouli and sandalwood, and a sweet sensation I’m not sure if it’s plum or nuts. This dry down is generic but addictive. The strength lies in the opening and the sweet tobacco heart with suede. It’s the tobacco note dreamed of, even if gourmand notes overpower it. Very good for winter and autumn, with moments of freshness due to its fougère character. Has conquest potential. Heavy to moderate trail, controllable, and lasted over 12 hours. It has become my top ten. It was replaced by Michael Kors for Men last year, so don’t confuse them. If you find it, it’s a recommended blind buy.

Projection and longevity are top-notch, though it depends on the skin; a friend with sensitive pH wore it for 6–8 hours and it was a hit.
