First Instinct by Abercrombie & Fitch is an aromatic fougère fragrance for men. Launched in 2016, this composition was created by perfumer Philippe Romano. Upon release, the scent unfolds with melon, tonic water, and gin; the heart reveals Sichuan pepper, violet leaves, and citrus; while the base settles on musk, suede, and amber.

  • First Instinct seems fruity, aromatic, and fresh. The opening is very good and pleasant, with a fruity scent that Fragantica says is melon; it gave me a sense of energy and freshness. A few minutes later, without the fruity aroma fading, a spicy pepper note began to emerge, a bit in the style of the new Dior Sauvage. For the first two hours, it seemed very pleasant, but in its dry-down phase, it felt a bit boring and common to me. It maintains a youthful spirit throughout almost its entire development; it will surely appeal to a younger audience. The main drawback was the low longevity, and except for the first hour, the projection was very weak. I don’t know if the bottle was in optimal condition or if that was the standard performance, but those were my impressions. I don’t recommend buying it blindly because it’s not cheap, but if you try it on your skin and like it, go for it, as the scent is pleasant and could be used in multiple scenarios.

It reminds me of my homemade mixes of mint liqueur, gin, and aldehydes—something I do because cheap perfumes evaporate quickly, so I have to seal them with my own additions: myrrh, frankincense, lots of musk (a whole mummy of musks), colorful peppers, legitimate vanilla, all natural and in just the right proportions, plus other secrets nobody tells. Nothing beats the pleasure of making something balanced and fair for yourself that isn’t sold anywhere else. By the way, it’s incredible how gins, Dry Gins, and others blend to create aromas totally different from what you’d expect, completely outside of logic.

  • Abercrombie & Fitch First Instinct is the scent of cool summer evenings; I can picture myself taking a sip on a Caribbean beach with this aroma. It’s a luxury brand that’s hard and expensive to find here. The opening is exquisite and aromatic: a gin-fresh blend with juniper berries, herbal and musky, mixing with fern, melon, and pepper. In the first few minutes, there’s an intense freshness and oriental warmth. Combined, they create something very attractive: soft, not overwhelming, ideal for daily wear, with decent longevity of about 4 hours and a pleasant trail. If there were an EDP version, it would be fantastic for my skin, as fresh scents can be tricky for me. The clear glass bottle with that grey-blue color play looks like the rippling water of a frozen stream—what an idea! It features a silver plate with the brand names and a textured silver cap that is beautiful, elegant, and heavy. Rating: 6.7/10.

  • It’s not a failure at all; it’s pure summer energy—super fresh and fruity, with that youthful DNA everyone’s looking for. The structure is solid: it starts strong and evolves into something aquatic with hints of melon and lime, contrasting beautifully with a suede and musk base that gives it a rocky, masculine vibe, setting it apart from the generic crowd. While it lacks a bit of mystery, it offers comfort, carefree confidence, and a spark, and it performs well. My tastes have changed since then, but I’ll admit, at twenty, I would have worn this a lot. Perfect for a young person looking to chill out outdoors on a summer night, dressed in light colors, chasing their seasonal love with enthusiasm.

  • I tried it in a store, just out of curiosity… Its opening is very fresh, with sparkling notes, like a soda, and with a very intense fruity touch but not of a particular fruit, but of a bag of freshly bought fruits… That freshness fades and transforms into a medium-spiced, dry, and ambered finish… It lasts a maximum of 4 hours and its sillage is very poor… For summer, youthful, soft, and cute.

On my skin, three notes dominate: citrus, melon, and musk. Very good for hot summer days, it’s a very versatile and youthful perfume. Longevity 6 hours, sillage 2 hours. If you like perfumes like Kenneth Cole Reaction and Polo Blue, you must try it. I give it an 8/10.

First Instinct seems like a fragrance with an eminently youthful and carefree attitude. Maybe I’m contradicting myself, as in other reviews I’ve mentioned that I don’t see some perfumes as suitable for a young audience (I remember Tom Ford Tobacco Oud and Loewe 7), however, this First Instinct, although youthful, I think anyone can wear it regardless of age (after all, youth is an attitude, right? Or am I just a kid? Haha). In this creation by Abercrombie, we have a fruity blend with musk and a violet note that, in some brief moments, reminds me of Montblanc Emblem, but only briefly. The opening is like opening a can of peaches in syrup (peach isn’t a declared note), mixed with melon notes. Then it gives way to violets and musk. It’s a great scent to feel in a good mood. Fresh and sparkling, it will surely feel good at the office, going out with friends, and why not, even on a date. Good projection of 2-3 hours, moderate to be sure. And a longevity of at least 7 hours make this fragrance an important part of my collection. Timeless, cheerful, and harmonious. Well done, Abercrombie. Greetings.

  • Martinhuelerico

This is one of those perfumes your nose gets used to quickly, but after 4 hours, I’ve heard it still “smells good.” Youthful and perfect for summer days from dawn to dusk. Perfect for daily use. I love it, and others do too.

This is one of those perfumes your nose gets used to quickly, but after four hours, I’ve heard it still ‘smells rich.’ Youthful and perfect for summer days from dawn until dusk. Ideal for daily use. I love it, and others do too.

  • It has a scent you get used to and smells good, even if it’s linear. You can feel the tropical and melon notes, which are usually very common in female fragrances, but they are well-executed for the male gender. The only downside is its longevity; on my skin, it hovers around 3-4 hours. The fragrance is more oriented toward a youthful audience. If you don’t mind reapplying, use it; it’s a good fragrance.

  • FIRST INSTINCT by Abercrombie & Fitch, or how to create a flanker in the style of Dior Sauvage without trying too hard. And watch out, I don’t mean it’s a clone, as it lacks some quality and that dominant pepper to be one. But it moves in that trendy generic sphere of the Aromatic Aquatic Musky family. It can be as much a wearable, insignificant scent as a commercial space air freshener with pretensions of luxury or a restaurant restroom scent. I perceive the undeniable white musk, melon, aquatic calone, and a bitter note that could come from various components, each more imbued with arrogance. This type of aromatic accord saturates me quickly and feels tiring. It’s a scent that’s completely in fashion and smelled everywhere, but has nothing to do with my tastes. It lacks personality, body, and packaging. It has too much misunderstood modernity, youthful coldness, and unhidden arrogance. If there’s one thing I find unpleasant, it’s that bitter gin touch, which could also be a blend of bitter citrus notes composed of yuzu, lime peel, grapefruit, and artichoke. Or even a cocktail of hepatic herbs based on wormwood, desmodium, milk thistle, and buckthorn. A mix of bitter, cholagogue, and choleretic aromas that activate the liver and gallbladder based on bitterness and bad attitude. Because despite FIRST INSTINCT by Abercrombie & Fitch being born with the vocation of being a cute, sweet perfume, the result is a stretched, bitter, somewhat distant, and haughty fragrance. It reminds me of runway models, stretched and thin like perverse reeds, proudly showing their frizzy, messy hair, square chin, squinting eyes, and attitude of being above good and evil.

  • A fragrance that breaks the mold for warm climates. At first, thanks to the freshness of the melon and that spicy gin touch, it seems made for hot days, but as it evolves, the licorice and pepper notes gain strength. I get the impression that on days over 32-33°C it could become annoying, though I haven’t tested it in those conditions. On the other hand, I like it because it’s a different scent. Very neat. Peculiar; it might be loved or hated. I’ll keep giving it chances because I feel comfortable with it and enjoy it. I don’t recommend buying it blind, but do try it on your skin. Go find it, apply it, and draw your own conclusions. Cheers, fragrance lovers.

  • Very good scent, a bit sweet and linear. The only downside is that on my skin it lasts 3-4 hours. But for the price, it’s amazing.

  • Intoxicating cocktail-summer vibe, in my opinion leaning youthful, ideal for 18-28 year olds but works for any age. Best used in summer, with lots of sun or alcohol around: outdoor parties, beach vacations, drinking with a light tee, etc. I’m not a nose expert, but you can smell the melon, pepper, and a gin note that’s alcoholic yet perfectly sweetened by the other ingredients. I recommend trying it with at least 5 sprays to get the most out of it. Lasts 2-3 hours projecting strongly on arms and 5-6 hours on skin. Given the price, I recommend it; if I spend 13€ on the 30ml this summer, I’ll have the biggest bottle at an acceptable price.

  • Smells super fruity, keeping Abercrombie’s classic DNA intact. I don’t get much melon; it’s more like watermelon with those typical acidic, aromatic fruits. It has that signature metallic touch from the brand and some fresh marine notes. Reminded me of CH Chic, which I still prefer to be honest. It’s very wearable, youthful, and quite original. Would I buy it again? Not sure… Why? Because it lasts only a few hours on my skin (or my nose gets used to it fast). Scent: 7/10 Longevity: 7/10 Projection: 7/10 Sillage: 6/10 Value: 6/10 Blind buy: 6/10 Season: All-season

  • I found it to be a very fruity scent, keeping the classic Abercrombie DNA. More than melon, I sense watermelon, leaning towards acidic and aromatic fruits. In the background, the brand’s classic metallic note and some fresh marine-style notes. It did remind me, honestly, of CH’s Chic, which I personally prefer. It’s very wearable, youthful, and quite original. Would I buy it again? I don’t know… Why? Because it lasts only a few hours on my skin (or my nose gets used to it quickly). Scent: 7/10, Longevity: 7/10, Projection: 7/10, Sillage: 6/10, Value for money: 6/10, Blind buy: 6/10, Season: mid-season.

  • A very rich, fresh, and sweet aroma like a fruit cocktail where the melon stands out quite a bit. Very tropical, beachy, and youthful. Average longevity, but it’s totally worth having it.

  • A very rich, fresh, and sweet scent, like a fruit cocktail where the melon really stands out. It’s very tropical, beachy, and youthful. Longevity is average, but it’s totally worth having.

  • It pleasantly surprised me. I had it a while ago and bought it again thanks to a good promotion. I used it the first day with 9 sprays, and after leaving work, 9 hours later, I still smelled a charming, tropical, and sweet scent without being cloying, similar to ‘Y’ in the dry-down (keeping the distance). Excellent for the 31-degree heat. It wasn’t right on the skin; it projected very lightly, but it reactivated at the gym. With sweat and heat, it left a very pleasant, light trail. I loved it, and for the price, I think it’s an excellent option. When you least expect it, it surprises you the most.

  • I happened to try it at a perfumery today. The bottle seemed normal, but I didn’t want to give an opinion until about 30 minutes had passed. I realized it has a certain resemblance to Paco Rabanne’s One Million, but you only notice that after half an hour. It smells quite good; it’s not the most delicious, but it’s good for a brand less renowned than famous European houses. I recommend it because its projection is normal, like the average, and it has average durability.

  • NICOLASPF97

A very rich perfume. At first, it’s effervescent, but within a minute it turns into creamy, fresh, and juicy melon. Very good fragrance for daily use; most people like it. It feels totally unisex. Decent longevity: I applied it at 7:20 AM, and by 5 PM it was right on the skin (my colleagues noticed it). Average projection: strong for the first hour, then more intimate.

Primer Instinto is a summer perfume that doesn’t deliver everything you’d want, but it has very beautiful, refreshing, tonic, and cheerful scents. I like it more than the Extreme version, which is overloaded with violets, pepper, coconut, and starfruit—notes I don’t like. Although it lasts longer, it’s not worth it. I see it for daytime or casual dinners (with air conditioning) where it opens up and maintains a gin and tonic with ice and seasonal melon. It continues with very subtle violets, citrus, and soft pepper, closing with leather, musk, and amber. It’s not too expensive for the season and pairs well with others in the heat. Very unique in its genre, it’s well-liked, not overhyped, and pleasant. I recommend trying it. As is logical with this type of perfume, don’t expect spectacular longevity or projection; maybe you need to reapply or start with more.

  • Daniel 1979

Excellent opening, fruity and sweet. Heart is a bit synthetic. Base is delicious with a very soft sweetness.

  • Clean, fresh, aquatic, bubbly, sweet melon, tonic, perfect for the gym, easy, casual, and uncomplicated.

  • At first, that effervescence and gin give it an alcoholic, metallic touch typical of tonic. The melon is noticeable even after drying, alongside synthetic fruity notes like ‘cake’. The violets, pepper, and citrus are subtle but show up after 20 minutes, standing out in my favorite part: the dry-down. There, the amber, suede, and musk blend with the heart into a talc-like, sweet aroma with flashes of the opening. It’s illogical that the quality matches the price (570 pesos MX, about 30 euros). I don’t like the suede because it stains clothes the next day, but it performs well and lasts. It projects well for the first 3 hours and has good longevity. Even though I dislike the suede, it has lovely scents, is tropical, fun, and not overhyped. It’s not my favorite, but it has its charms. It will run out in a year and a half, and I probably won’t buy it again. The atomizer isn’t the best. Still, I recommend it to those who’ve tried it and like it. The price is ridiculous for what it offers. Success.

  • EnolMenéndez

As soon as you step out, that dry effervescence of tonic water and gin is immediately noticeable. It dries down quickly, then the citrus and melon emerge—something I couldn’t distinguish without reading the notes. The best part is the dry-down: the sharp notes and spicy touch fade away to leave freshness and sweetness. I tried it on the go, remembered it later, and bought it again. It’s fresh but has personality for summer; it’s neither a miracle nor trash. It projects about 120 cm for two hours. I recommend getting a decant to enjoy the dry-down. Spray 8-10 times to get 2-3 hours of projection and refresh with the decant. On the skin, it lasts 7-8 hours.

  • Jerson RG

I like the scent; it feels good, summery, and fruity. Something curious happens: if I’m from Mexico, this smells like fruit with chamoy to me. It’s a scent I like, but it catches my attention because of that memory. Lasts 6 hours, projects about 3 feet. Affordable, under 600 Mexican pesos (around $35 USD). I recommend it for spring-summer; it smells nice, the bottle is nice—simple but elegant. A good buy for the scent and price.

  • A very unique scent with great value for money. Perfect for casual days when you need a personal bubble for your own enjoyment. A bit youthful, I’d say it suits ages 13 to 30, though I wear it at 35 for low-key, unnoticed outings. The melon with a liquor twist gives it a unique personality.

  • Juan Pablo Melgoza Maldon

Incredible perfume! I can’t believe it goes unnoticed with such a great scent. Everyone loves it and it always draws attention. It works great in the office, at lunch, in the afternoons, and for casual outings. Women love it and always ask, ‘What perfume are you wearing?’ Before buying, the melon and suede notes really caught my attention. Upon trying it, WOW! Fresh, spicy, and fruity opening. As it dries down, the suede and musk appear—incredible, super interesting, and clean. It’s a must-have for hot weather and all the events of this season. At an accessible price, reapplying isn’t an issue. Average performance, about a meter of sillage, strong projection for the first hour, then it fades.

  • Alexrojas2908

Super rich. Unfortunately, longevity isn’t its strong suit; it’s far from a beast mode.

  • Alexrojas2908

Smells great, literally like a melon gin and tonic, and I like the packaging. Unfortunately, it doesn’t last long and doesn’t project as much as an EDT should. If you find it at a really good price, I recommend it, because you’ll finish it very quickly.

  • FedericoAlexisB

It’s a delight, smells high-quality. Opens super fruity, pure melon with no alcohol smell or anything off. I’d categorize it as a melon fruit cocktail; it’s similar to Chic for Men but sweeter. I paid $55 at Duty Free in Iguazu; in Buenos Aires, it’s worth about triple that.

  • I tested it over a month on various occasions and temperatures. It’s pleasant, nothing surprising but it delivers. A solid everyday signature for anyone, regardless of age or gender. Average performance, leaning low: strong projection for the first half-hour, then it becomes a skin scent. I like subtle fragrances that don’t overwhelm or annoy, so it works well for me. It doesn’t last more than 4 hours, but for the price, it’s not annoying to reapply. During that time, I keep smelling myself, though less and less until the 4-hour mark. Don’t be afraid to reapply; I suggest about 12 sprays. If you like subtle day fragrances, especially in the heat, it’s a good option due to the low cost. Although I wouldn’t buy it again, there are better options on the market for the same price.

  • AngeloCitrusy

Good fragrance, pleasant and easy-to-wear scent, though slightly different, youthful, and with a synthetic touch. For the price, it’s decent, but the longevity is a breath; a good option for heat and short activities. After two hours, it’s barely noticeable up close. Smells fresh and the drydown is nice thanks to the suede note. Rating: 6/10.

  • Honest and fulfilling fragrance: it delivers what it promises. It’s not a beast, but it’s not bad either; good scent and performance. Ideal as a mid-range signature, wearable in any situation and leaves you feeling great. Maybe avoid it for formal events, but for everything else, it’s fine. I don’t detect gin or suede. Lasts 4 hours with good projection during the first hour; it won’t blow your head off, but it pleases those around you and makes you feel fresh and clean. The opening melon note persists throughout the fragrance’s life and is very pleasant.

  • A&F’s Instinct surprises us with First, a gem that outshines Authentic and Away, rivaling Fierce. It’s an experimental A&F: tropical melon in tonic water and gin, fresh, aquatic, and ozonic. Then, citrus Sichuan pepper and bright musk transform the typical air freshener scent into an energizing summer drink. It smells like a cocktail, a gin and tonic with melon chunks; when you wear it, you feel like you’re at a bar by the sea, with clean skin and people who just went surfing. Young, electric, tropical. It’s the spiritual successor to Fierce: if that was the scent of the 90s and 2000s, First is the scent of the 2020s. Lasts 6 hours, projects strongly for 2 hours, then fades to a subtle trail; the evolution is slow, moving from fruity notes to the luminosity of musk. Informal, youthful, perfect for heat; the heat gives it dimension and it appeals to any man. 4/4: even if it’s in the ‘lower leagues,’ it doesn’t envy designer warhorses for summer. It competes with Versace Pour Homme in price and offers a unique scent (melon gin tonic). Outstanding quality, a unique concept that overshadows Extreme, Blue, and Together. Indispensable: affordable, charming, and standout. Its only sin: not being from a prestigious house.
