Descripción
Ralph Lauren's Extreme Polo Sport is a woody oriental fragrance for men. Launched in 1998, the nose behind this composition is René Morgenthaler. The top notes reveal pepper, mint, bergamot, nutmeg, coriander, and juniper berries; the heart unfolds cypress, helichrysum, and guaiac wood; while the base notes settle on sandalwood, elemi resin, and frankincense.

This extinct masterpiece passed through perfume stores without much fanfare a couple of years ago at the end of the last century, but it left an indelible mark on me, to the point that I have half a bottle of after-shave saved to keep it. It was a fragrance that rebelled against everything and everyone: against its time and the market (1998, the peak of ADG and aquatic clones), against its name (if you smelled it on a strip, the last thing you’d think is that it’s a Polo Sport), and even against its creator (RL is associated with ‘friendly’ or ‘crowd-pleasing’ scents, this is the exact opposite). Because it went against everything, it got a quick thumbs down. The closest thing I smelled was Encre Noire, though very different; Ralph’s is much fresher and ‘extreme,’ I suppose due to the mint and clary sage.
Ufff… THE PERFUME! I can’t believe it’s no longer in production. It was my favorite from the moment I discovered it until it became impossible to find. I never found a similar scent. I think the last bottle I had was in 2004 or 2005. Pure nostalgia for this monster.
Top fragrance, I wore it from around 2000 until approximately 2006. That year I couldn’t restock it because I couldn’t find it anywhere in Buenos Aires. Luckily, while visiting small perfume shops (I always find discontinued treasures), I found one with a well-sealed bottle of Polo Sport Extreme. I bought three units at a great price. I’m still enjoying this gem today.
Extreme Polo Sport by Ralph Lauren. What a fragrance! I snagged it on sale along with a clothing set and stumbled upon the last tiny tube, full of dust, at a local perfume shop. I grabbed it for the price and because it’s Ralph Lauren. The moment I applied it, it made a massive impact: black pepper, nutmeg, and cilantro dominated everything, even spicy. After a few minutes, it turned spicy with very prominent chili and cypress notes. It lasted for hours and everyone kept asking what I was wearing. It’s a shame they discontinued it, just like Hilfiger Athletics. It was the last RL fragrance made by the American house under license (I think Corsair) before L’Oréal took over. It was a men’s perfume, before the ‘unisex’ trend ruined the market so much. What a pity we don’t make gems like this anymore. If I saw it again, I’d buy it without hesitation. 10/10
