The photo shows the limited edition; the original comes in a white bottle. I tested the original version at a perfumerie and have to say it’s the one that lasts the longest on my skin (over 12 hours); I’ve tried about 40 fragrances. Watch out: it smells clean, but don’t spray it on clothes because on fabric it smells dirty. The notes I notice the most are ginger, citrus, oakmoss, and cilantro. I like Clinique Happy more, though that barely lasts two hours on me. Chemistry is dry and fresh; I wouldn’t call it green because its freshness smells like ginger, like a kitchen with cilantro. It doesn’t seduce, doesn’t spark joy or sadness; it’s simply a mature, masculine scent ideal for everyday wear.
Smells like traditional barbershop soap, very clean. I’m surprised it doesn’t have aldehydes in its notes; it feels like a cross between Tabac by Maurer & Wirtz and Eau Sauvage. Good longevity and sillage. (2015 reformulation)
I’ve always wanted to wear Chemistry but never did. I considered buying it blind from international websites, but I’ve been let down so many times… I think I’m overly influenced by the bottle’s cleanliness, so beautiful and clean in a 1960s Rabanne style, the resemblance to the Aromatics Elixir packaging with its gray smoke, and especially the Irving Penn campaigns. Minimalist still lifes where the photographer discarded hundreds of shots to find perfection, even if it was just a glass with a comb. Will Chemistry live up to the image I’ve built in my head?
Chemistry and Wrappings have me curious… what scent can be enclosed in such a clean bottle? Discreet and soft? Definitely not. Heavy and insolent? No way. With another brand, looking at the packaging would tell you if it’s a soft floral or a light aquatic… but with Clinique in 1990, you certainly wouldn’t. Called Chemistry, even less so. It confuses me. I imagine something spotless but with many nuances, intense and deep, cold with hot flashes, sharp yet calm, like a fresh river dragging diverse materials. A day that’s neither cloudy nor sunny. Am I off track? I’m dying to try it.
I’m going to buy this blind; if it fails, at least I’ll have a pretty bottle. On foreign forums, people either hate it or adore it, no in-between. Detractors say it smells like aldehydes without actually having them, calling it a fétid, strange lady bomb. Fans compare it to barbershop soap, very masculine with an interesting, furious calm. I like both sides, especially the critics who say it smells old—that’s usually my sign that I love it. I’m fascinated by the idea of creating nature from a chemical lab, a very Comme des Garçons concept from its early days when the brand had more sense and better quality.
