Coty wrote history again with Chypre. Although the term already existed he gave it a unique twist by creating accords that defined the Chypre family as we know it. He drew inspiration from the forests of his childhood capturing that woody resinous and mossy scent. That intense narcotic and characterful aroma was also present in his first hit La Rose Jacqueminot. Beyond wood and moss citrus is key. The style Coty imposed dominated perfumery for decades creating a family that while evolved remains evergreen. Chypre inspired Mitsouko by Guerlain Femme Rochas Cabochard by Gres and countless others. I like some chypres and not others; there are interesting ones I wouldn’t wear others that are very pleasant and some that just aren’t for me. This genre has become super versatile over time so you should always try them before buying.
