Tomo by Annayake

I’m the voice of dissent: this is the third Annayake I’ve tried and the one that fits me least. It doesn’t smell bad at all, but it feels too feminine despite the notes, which actually suggest something more masculine. After smelling it, I double-checked that it wasn’t the ‘for Her’ version, yet based on the notes, one would expect a clearly masculine touch. I was perplexed to see most people classify it as masculine; I’d put it in unisex, though personally, it leans more toward women. As a side note, I tested it in the middle of summer, which might have distorted my perception compared to those who reserve it for spring or autumn. Still, despite its femininity, I see it as light enough for the heat and a great choice for a woman in summer. I’ll keep it and try again in autumn; if my opinion changes, I’ll update this review.

I bought it after watching tons of videos and reading reviews. The moment I smelled it, I thought: ‘smells great, but totally different from what I imagined.’ I liked it from the start, though I had to give it some time. It’s a clean scent, but a rougher, perhaps sharper kind of clean compared to Prada, and that’s not a bad thing. The tonka bean is very noticeable and I love it, even though I wasn’t used to that note combination. I agree with some: you either hate it or love it; I love it, and many people in my circle do too. The only drawback is performance: average longevity, about 5 or 6 hours like most, but the projection is weak. It’s more of an intimate fragrance, for being close, talking face-to-face, or dancing. In short, it smells good, it’s clean, slightly sweet and spicy, even seductive, but very subtle.

To me, this perfume is no different from others on the market. It smells very soft and subtle, but with little sillage and longevity, no more than three hours on my skin. I use it in fresh spring or autumn days in Andalusia—not cold, because Tomo isn’t a warm scent. It’s for daily use, no pretensions. It’s in my wardrobe, but it’s one of those I wear to make a statement. I don’t regret buying it, but I won’t buy another. It will go into my olfactory history without much glory or shame. That said, the bottle is gorgeous, and when I finish it, I’ll use it as decoration.
