Nightflight by Joop!

Nightflight by Joop! is now super sought-after; the price has skyrocketed from €35 to €100, and there are very few units left. I grab everything that comes out, but given the name ‘Night,’ I expected more; here, the weight is on ‘Flight,’ making it something serious and elegant for men over 30, similar to Heir by Paris Hilton, though Heir gets sweeter later. I liked it, but it’s for special occasions. I was surprised it had pineapple and was so noticeable; to me, it smells like lemon, rose, and lots of alcohol, drying down to a masculine scent thanks to the musk. They could have added vanilla or cocoa like in Heir. It’s fine for guys 30+, I can’t say anything bad about the designer.

This NIGHT FLIGHT is hard to get a handle on, especially for a JOOP. At first, it seemed unpleasant, piercing, and grating. Excessively artificial, with a premeditated nocturnal vibe and an abuse of authority. Like cheap hairspray that you’re not sure will hold or frizz your hair. I didn’t form an opinion immediately because I learned you have to give perfumes a chance. It grated on me at first like Chanel No. 5 did when I was little, but now I tolerate it a bit more. It still feels synthetic and artificial, though that doesn’t have to be bad; most masculine Joop scents are. Nightflight handles a difficult-to-assimilate accord; I don’t detect the listed notes. It’s very musky, with those incisive white musks that give you a gag reflex. The oriental family listed on the sheet is fake; it’s aromatic, musky, and aldehydic. The aldehydes are pungent, acidic, and volatile, intensifying that emetic citrus musk. I acknowledge it has more notes than just the musk, but I can’t describe them. I’m sure it carries synthetic citrus and herbal notes. I could detect citronellal, geraniol, melonal, and benzaldehyde, but I don’t sense anything natural. Performance is excellent, personality is strong, usable without hyper-dosing but mandatory to test first.

No doubt about it: the moment you apply it, you’re transported back to the late 80s and early 90s. These are fresh classics starting with lavender and citrus, with herbs and sandalwood in the base. I doubt today’s youth would appreciate it, since modern scents lean sweet and citrusy, like Invictus. This Nightflight opens similarly to Polo Sport, too much so, but as it dries, that almond note emerges, making it unique and its best phase: it shifts to a pleasant balsamic touch with soft woods. The pineapple is only noticeable at the start, and the citrus fades quickly. The dry-down is great; if you’re over 30 and tired of fresh fragrances that don’t last, this is a solid choice. Scent: 8, Longevity: 8 hours, Projection: 7, Price: 10.

I’ve been using this for years; I always saw it as a freshie from the early 90s, but not aquatic like Cool Water. The lack of an aquatic nuance is accentuated by elegant lavender, sandalwood, and bergamot. And it has that special point: the pineapple. A sweet, friendly pineapple, like a Sugus candy. It works very well in summer; it refreshes but has that ‘something more’ with character for special occasions. The structure is complete, wearable day and night. Projection and longevity are correct. A charming and honest aroma. Personally, I like it more than Aventus.

Pineapple, citrus, and lavender. That’s pretty much it. Although the list has tons of notes, I don’t detect many of them. In the drydown, maybe slightly more musky. The smell is very synthetic; the opening makes me sneeze, and I have to hold my breath. But aside from that, it’s not entirely bad; the drydown is pleasant, though always synthetic. Longevity is good, though the projection seems moderate. A perfume for hot weather, very masculine. It has that old-school 90s touch. I didn’t try the vintage, but it was surely better. For the price it costs, you can’t ask for more.

I had the chance to own it. For me, it’s strictly nocturnal, not versatile; you have to find the right spot in the middle notes. The opening is somewhat artificial in the citrus, and the base is slow but constant, subject to changes. It has good sillage and longevity (you have to take it with patience), and I think it has its own world that can please or not. It shares some notes with the original Joop Homme but has nothing to do with it. Joop Homme is more versatile, sweeter, and fits better with the oriental family without giving up on woods or florals. Nightflight is very atypical and for its specific time slot (neither before nor after); its middle notes emit unexpected sparks that greatly embellish the fragrance. This review is of the original; I don’t know if it was reformulated or discontinued, because its predecessor, Joop Homme, also stopped making those sudden changes in its reformulation, eliminating nutty notes that made it bitter. When I chose, I went with Joop Homme, and this one is still in my closet today.

This was my first perfume in my teens, and if I’m lucky enough to find it, people say, ‘dude, you smell like Luis’—they recognize me by that scent. It’s vintage from 1992 and smells incredible; you leave a trail and it has great longevity. But it has a flaw: if you wear it during the day and sweat, it smells terrible, which is why it’s called ‘Noche Vuelo’ (Night Flight)—perfect for going out. I’m surprised no one has reviewed it; it smells exquisite. Being old, it does feel synthetic or high in alcohol, but it’s a masterpiece, so I’ll have to buy it online.
