Looking for a daily perfume, I stumbled upon Benton. Online, especially in Mexico, it’s sold at ridiculous prices: $290 or $95 on eBay for a single 50ml bottle. To me, those prices are unjustifiable; that’s why I paid about $30 for the only one left, a price I think is more than fair. The first impression reminded me of Escada’s Magnetism, that discontinued classic that’s hard to find, but much less potent, almost in a disconcerting way. Benton opens with a very youthful fruity note, easy gourmand twists that fade quickly to reveal a powdery tonka over an intense wood column. The blend is refined and cheerful, with amber nuances that make it opaque and dry. Unlike its sibling Maximum, here the effective opening shifts to more sober territory. It feels complex, well-assembled, and harmonious, yet discreet. It’s versatile because it’s not intrusive or trying to be alpha male; it seems like an almost single-note scent where a quality woody tonka reigns, perfect for rainy or mild days if applied well. In short, today its price remains unjustifiable.
