A damn-perfect masterpiece. Maybe it should be called ‘Damn Perfect’. The tobacco starts sweet and spiced with Japanese plum, then projects oud and castoreum (beaver anal secretion) before turning into a brief Viennese-style chocolate dessert. Once released, the other two versions (Amber Absolute and Plum Japonais) no longer matter, as this one surpasses and subsumes them. Undoubtedly, it’s the scent of great conquerors like Darius I, Nebuchadnezzar II, Alexander the Great, and Charlemagne, wrapped in the glorious smoke of legend.
I tried it and didn’t like it. The castoreum is maxed out: it smells like a dirty rodent cage with feed and wood shavings. It’s very animalic and hard to wear with a sharp suit. The oud and tobacco are nice, but as it dries down, the castoreum lingers and gives off a chicken feed vibe. A huge disappointment because Fragrantica doesn’t match reality. There’s a lot of snobbery here; it’s conceptual, not usable, because no one will praise the smell of sweaty rodents. I wouldn’t buy it blind.
