I can’t find any amber in this, sorry. This scent is surprising for a house that usually makes dark and powerful fragrances; it’s one of their most daytime and luminous. To me, it’s a powdery marine perfume, in the style of Francesca Bianchi’s Mariners Rhyme, but with an added note of a gloomy, damp cave like Zoologist’s The Bat or the authentic Nightflyer by Ellen Covey in Olympic Orchids, minus the banana note. Pity the performance isn’t like the others: weak sillage and projection, moderate longevity. In a niche context, the price isn’t excessive, so you can always reapply.
Marine, but nothing fresh or aquatic (that would be more like Cape Wrath). The Grudge smells like stranded marine vegetation on the beach, drying out in the sun, with a touch that almost borders on putrefaction. It’s not for everyone, like most of the brand, but if you like something bizarre and unique, give it a try. Words can only give you an idea; you have to smell it first. I liked it, but it’s not for daily wear—only for occasional use when you’re in the mood.
Another one I expected to be more impressive based on the reviews—people were saying it smelled like rotting sperm whale or just terrible. To me, it reminds me of Tom Ford’s Oud Minerale, though this is more potent, animalic, and marine, yet in the same style. If Oud Minerale had an extrait, this would be it. It doesn’t smell fresh or like being on a boat, nor does it smell rotten; it smells like a walk along the beach at low tide with the shoreline full of seaweed. It’s not my style (nor Oud Minerale’s either).
