Descripción

Rake & Ruin by BeauFort London is an olfactory fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2018, the nose behind this composition is Julie Dunkley. The top notes reveal a complex bouquet of smoke, angelica, gin, juniper, Sichuan pepper, pink pepper, licorice, cilantro, lemon, and orange. The heart of the fragrance is sustained by a smoky and earthy atmosphere thanks to the presence of cypress, castoreum, pine needles, cade oil, labdanum, costus, iris root, and violet. Finally, the base notes close the experience with a persistent foundation of smoke, woods, amber, musk, and sandalwood.

I don’t think my perception does it justice, so I’ll skip commenting on the notes because I can’t identify them despite the very complex pyramid. Rake & Ruin is extremely difficult, almost experimental. The only thing I smell on my skin is a photorealistic impression of grass and wet earth wrapped in a halo of ‘dirty’ smoke, probably from the castoreum. Considering it experimental, I don’t think there’s an ideal occasion, perhaps in autumn where nature lends a hand to produce what is recreated here. My comment, more than a description, will be a warning: don’t even think about buying it blindly.

I am a lover of dark fragrances. But this is the true ‘no more can go’ in darkness. This is how the Prince of the Underworld should smell. Nothing compares, not even from a distance, in terms of intensity and degree of olfactory savagery in the blackest shade of black that could possibly exist in fragrance ‘tones’. Not ash, not incense, not wood smoke from other fragrances. It is smoke smelling of wet, moldy wood, of burnt stones from ruins that caused an unnatural, magical, and fantastic debacle. There were no human armies, no horses, no smell of mammals or salty blood… As if a malevolent power or a pack of dragons had razed a city. Seriously, don’t try this at home. It is the fragrance of fear and darkness. No doubts.

ASQUEROSO is too kind of an adjective; be careful and try this garbage before buying it. It smells like an old lady, like something ancient, like something disgusting. The only thing it provokes in me is nausea.

ASQUEROSA IS TOO KIND OF AN ADJECTIVE, BE CAREFUL AND TRY THIS SHIT BEFORE YOU EVEN CONSIDER BUYING IT!!!! IT SMELLS LIKE AN OLD LADY, LIKE ANTIQUITY, SOMETHING DISGUSTING. THE ONLY THING IT MAKES ME DO IS VOMIT.

Alright, all in order. Niche doesn’t know how to make something different and smell good, so they decide to make something different even though it smells like lightning. Typical. I wore it and felt like God because everyone gave me my personal space. It was like Raid for cockroaches for the rest of mortals. Considering my penchant for solitude and isolation, it was a fantastic day to not go unnoticed. It also works for getting out of the shower; spray it four times and give the impression you haven’t showered in a week. Everything has its audience. Or you can roll in manure, eat smoked sausage, and cook cauliflower at home; it’s cheaper. I’ll finish the sample to go to my mother-in-law’s house.

  • What a wild ride! Perhaps the most difficult fragrance in niche Beaufort, inspired by naval/war episodes in England three hundred years ago. They are a house that designs what comes out of their noses, not what you want. They do well, because if you want to smell like bubblegum or lemon, there are plenty of options. If you’re looking for this, you have few alternatives. It smells like smoked ham or bacon macerated in gin, as if someone opened the moldy hold of a ship to retrieve reserve provisions. Linking it to a port tavern is what the house wants. I’ll leave the question of what it’s for to other experts, as it requires an answer I lack. I’d say it’s for a tough business meeting where you don’t seek to please but to impose in a negotiation. A perfume for war, not peace. But be careful it doesn’t devour you. At the same time, I imagine uses that are more ‘for adults,’ because it’s sexual to no end. There has to be something for everyone in the Lord’s vineyard.

  • Rake & Ruin didn’t work for me from Beaufort. You don’t truly understand darkness until you try something from this house. Few perfumes leave you stunned, for better or worse, like this one. That’s why Beaufort commands my total respect. Its opening is smoky, traditional for the house, but here the smoke combines with woods and moldy flowers. It’s incredibly challenging to the nose. It transports you to an English port tavern in the 1800s: smoke, marinated meats, damp woods, liquor, and sweat. It’s infamous, offensive, and as gloomy as the bottom of the sea. There’s nothing like this because no one tries to create something so extreme. It could be an old forgotten alchemist’s tincture. Wearing it in public is bordering on madness. But I appreciate knowing the scent of perfumery’s darkest relic, in the corner of Beaufort that few enter.

  • I’m obsessed with this perfume. The opening is a herbal and woody explosion, like a fantasy forest. I love everything about it, but I’m not sure when or where to wear it.

  • I love this fragrance. The opening is a herbal and woody fireworks display, like a fantasy forest unlike any other. I don’t dislike a single note and can’t find a single moment or season where I wouldn’t wear it.

  • After Terror and Magnificence, this is my favorite from Beaufort. Although the ‘port tavern’ description fits Vi et Armis better than Rake and Ruin, this scent inspires the laboratory of a medieval alchemist or wizard, full of strange herbs and potion ointments. It’s herbal to no end, but not fresh; rather, dried and stored herbs, creating a bewitching, strange, and sublime aroma. A must-have alongside Terror and Magnificence for dark aesthetics (goths, metalheads) looking for something that matches their image. Forget the nonsense about summer, winter, day, night, men, or women; perfumes go with personality. Just like you wouldn’t wear certain clothes because they look like a costume, the same applies to perfumes: depending on who you are, there will be scents that make you feel more like yourself, and others that, while they might smell good, simply don’t suit you. Beaufort London gets this and does it right.

  • After Terror and Magnificence, this is my favorite from Beaufort. Although they say it smells like a port tavern, I think that description fits Vi et Armis better than Rake and Ruin. For me, it evokes an alchemist’s or medieval witch’s lab, full of strange herbs and potion-making ointments. It’s maximally herbal, but not fresh; it’s dried, stored herbs that create a spellbinding, rare, and sublime scent. It’s a must-have, alongside Terror and Magnificence, for the dark aesthetic (goths, metalheads, etc.) looking for something that matches that image. Forget the nonsense about whether it’s for summer or winter, day or night, man or woman. Perfumes go with your personality; just as you wouldn’t wear certain outfits and look like you’re in costume, the same applies to fragrances. Depending on who you are, your style, and your character, there will be scents that fit you perfectly and others that, even if they smell good, just don’t suit you. Beaufort London understands this and makes their perfumes accordingly.

  • I fully agree with Agonistes: Terror is my absolute favorite. I wore it to my wedding, so I don’t need to say more, though this is my second bottle. It’s a masterpiece; at first, I notice something fresh and citrusy in the top notes, about 10 minutes in, but nothing common or basic—a very special citrus I’ve never smelled before. Then it evolves into a green forest; if I close my eyes, everything I see is green, woods, herbs, but with an elegant, dirty, smoky touch. It’s unique, a BL masterpiece. I am a very dark person and I love the occult, the rare, and the different, and this just amazes me.
