Terror & Magnificence by BeauFort London is an olfactive fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2019, this composition features the olfactory signature of Pia Long. The top notes unfold birch tar, black pepper, and saffron; the heart reveals incense, tobacco, and Egyptian papyrus; while the base notes close the structure with Haitian vetiver, myrrh, myrrh, labdanum, benzoin, and pebbles.

I admit it smells good and lasts long, but it’s not my style. I know the smoky aroma is in fashion, but this one seems excessive to me. I’ve worn it all morning with the sensation of having spent the whole night surrounded by bonfires. The incense is very potent and has a smoky touch I’m not sure if it’s coal tar. Since those notes dominate so much, I couldn’t perceive anything else, not even the balsamic part of the benzoin or labdanum, which gets lost behind that feeling of fire. It reminds me a lot of City on Fire by Imaginary Authors or Bonfire by Martín Manglana. Olfactorily it’s very well done, but I simply don’t like smelling like this. Scent: 5, Longevity: 8, Sillage: 6, Value/Price: 5, Versatility: 4, Originality: 9, Overall: 6
I admit it smells good and lasts long, but it’s not my style. I know smoky scents are in fashion, but this seems excessive to me. I’ve worn it all day with the sensation of having spent the night around Ana Juan surrounded by bonfires. The incense is very potent and smells like something burned (maybe coal tar). Since those notes dominate so much, I didn’t feel anything else. I didn’t pick up the balsamic part (benzoin, labdanum…) behind that smell of fire. It reminds me a lot of City on Fire by Imaginary Authors or Bonfire by Martín Manglía. Olfactorily it’s very well done, but I simply don’t like smelling like this. Smells like an old library or a church; on my skin, the incense, papyrus, and smoke really stand out. Like most of Beaufort’s, it’s complex and only for special occasions or cold days. Very potent and long-lasting. If you love intense smoky and woody aromas, this is your pick. Scent: 7, Longevity: 9, Price: 7, Sillage: 8, Overall: 7.
It smells like an old library or a church; on my skin, incense, papyrus, and smoke dominate. Like almost everything from Beaufort, it’s a difficult perfume to wear, only for special occasions and cold days. Very potent and long-lasting on skin. If you like intense smoky and woody aromas, it’s a good option. Scent: 7, Longevity: 9, Price: 7, Sillage: 8, Overall: 7
Big disappointment with the Discovery set; it feels like a scam. These perfumes aren’t for classy daily wear, but difficult olfactory experiences to use. There’s a guy who talks about the house as if it were ‘super niche’ and it makes me laugh; instead of being objective, he seems like an enthusiastic salesman. Terror & Magnificence is an expensive experience, not a costly one, because the price is ridiculous compared to other niche or artisanal houses. The longevity, projection, and sillage are mediocre, and nobody wants to smell like fresh cement waiting for compliments. Don’t let yourselves be fooled by fake reviews; many YouTubers make videos like this to receive gifts. Don’t trust liars like Andres Mentiras Man or Apestame Mucho. Try, try, and try again because there’s too much hype and many lost gems.
Major disappointment. I bought the Discovery Set and it feels like a scam. These perfumes aren’t for everyday wear or class; they’re just difficult olfactory experiences. One of my first niche discoveries, a true perfume bomb. I decided after reading Eduardo García de Alba; my style is dark, so I didn’t hesitate a second and ordered a decant from my dealer in Guatemala. The opening is impactful: a crypt sensation, absolute terror but deliciously intense. After 10 minutes, it shifts to dark wood and a humid forest. Then, another 30 minutes, the extreme elegance of ‘Magnificence’ arrives, rivaling or surpassing Dior Homme Parfum with a pure woody quality. Finally, in 2 or 3 hours, the incense, myrrh, and benzoin transport you to an ancient church with sacred, old air. It’s a work of art. Curiously, two comments asked about that elegant scent and said they felt like they were in a procession. Longevity: 8 to 10 hours, more than enough. Rating: 10/10. The bottle is on its way. For lovers of the dark, buy blind. If you’re not used to this type of fragrance, you probably won’t like it.
One of my first niche scents. Total bomb. I read reviews and decided to go with Eduardo García de Alba’s. My style is darkness; although I own common fragrances, I prefer this type of aroma. I ordered the decant without hesitation. The opening transported me to a crypt: terror for some, absolute delight for me. Dark wood and wet forest notes for 30 minutes, followed by an elegance surpassing Dior Homme Parfum. Finally, the cycle of incense, myrrh, and benzoin, like in an old church. A piece of art. Lasts 8 to 10 hours. Rating 10. For dark tastes, buy blind; for others, you won’t like it.
A weak proposal from BeauFort: ignoring the pretty prose that accompanies every perfume, it’s rich and different for only 20 minutes, with a smoky, green, cold part—that’s the most special note. But after 20 minutes, everything falls apart and it stays as a smoky and tarred perfume, like any BeauFort base with nothing else, with less performance than other scents from the brand. Rating: 4.6/10
A weak offering from Beaufort. Stripping away the pretty prose, it’s rich and different for only 20 minutes, with smoky, green, and cold notes that are the most special part. Then it falls apart and settles into a typical smoky, tar-like base for the brand, with less performance than others. Rating: 4.6/10.
Stepping into the Cathedral of St. Vito in the rain and cold, with high ceilings and the scent of ancient incense, sounds impossible for beginners, but it’s a magical discovery for anyone looking to smile. It’s gorgeous, full of character, and makes you shout ‘wow’. Gothic and masculine, unless you’re an emo girl or a lover of dark things. I adore it. Lasting power is more than enough and the sillage is moderate; it doesn’t reach the heights of Iron Duke, but it doesn’t need to. Perfect for cold climates.
Imagine entering St. Vitus Cathedral in the Czech Republic on a rainy, cold day: high ceilings, a dark temple, and centuries-old incense. For beginners, this might be impenetrable, but for those looking to smile at a perfume, it’s a precious and purposeful discovery, the kind that makes you say ‘wow, what a perfume’. It’s gothic and masculine, except for emo women or those interested in the dark. I adore it. Lasting power is sufficient and the trail is medium; it doesn’t reach the titanic powers of Iron Duke but doesn’t need to. Ideal for cold climates.
If you’ve read ‘The Name of the Rose’ by Eco or seen the movie, you’ll remember the secret library of the abbey, filled with forbidden books that monks hid because knowledge threatened God. Terror and Magnificence smells exactly like that: damp, moldy stones, millennial dusty manuscripts, and liturgical incense. Never has a perfume mixed the sacred and profane, the holy and the sinful, so well. A true wonder that I’ll buy again until God (or the Devil) decides.
If you’ve read ‘The Name of the Rose’ by Eco or seen the movie, you’ll remember the secret library of the abbey, filled with forbidden books monks hid out of fear of God. Terror and Magnificence smells like that place: damp, mossy stones, dusty manuscripts, and liturgical incense. Never has a fragrance blended the sacred and the profane, the holy and the sinful, so well. A masterpiece I’ll keep buying until God or the Devil decides otherwise.
If you don’t like smoky perfumes or weird avant-garde proposals, there’s no point in trying this. If you’re already familiar with this house and its compositions, this perfume is on the same line as Tonnerre, Iron Duke, Vit et Armis… and maybe it won’t surprise you as much, though for me it has its own beauty. It fits into its line of smoky spicy scents; I’d say it has a more herbal dimension than the previous ones, something dry and metallic, perhaps due to the vetiver accord. The rest is what we know: an original smoky scent surrounded by exploding pepper that drags other spices along with it. On my part, I have to confess that I like any perfume from this house, even if their experiments with smoky notes can seem repetitive. It’s the perfume of Joan of Arc.
I’ve tried several from the house before and was expecting something much darker, but this isn’t it at all. The opening is intense and puts you on guard: maxed-out coal tar and lots of spices make the start feel like a brake… but that’s where it stops. It lasts only a few minutes. Soon, something different emerges. Something sweet and ambered. That tarred opening evaporates to leave, from that moment on, a simpler and less exhausting fragrance. An amber note that adds creaminess and sweetness, moving it away from terror and closer to normality. What remains is a smoky, incense-like, resinous scent. I’d say the panic subsides and a simpler darkness remains that’s comforting. I liked it quite a bit, though I wouldn’t buy it right now since I prefer another option from the brand. Unisex (terror knows no gender), good performance, and, needless to say, demands cold and darkness. Quite wearable, honestly. It would be good to start with Beaufort. Just don’t ask for versatility…
