It hit me very strong, like syrup on the skin. Although I love Oud, this version repelled me. I suppose it’s the scent for lovers of heavy fragrances, but it scared me off. I didn’t like it. Not everything expensive is good perfumery.
Stéphane Humbert Lucas’ Oud 777 is already discontinued; it doesn’t even appear on the official website, though you can still find it online. I tested it with an online sample meant for two uses, although I only wore it once. Supposedly it blends Oud from Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia, but it smells of several resins not listed: labdanum, myrrh, frankincense, and perhaps styrax. It’s dark, sticky, and smoky. At first, the Oud is intense and animalic, without that blue cheese scent some give off. The animal note lasts about 5 minutes, then the resins and a subtle leather kick in. The labdanum is very noticeable (similar to O Hira) along with an incense blend of frankincense and myrrh. Gradually, it becomes stickier and smokier, like burnt woods. It stays in that smoky tone for a few hours. In the dry down, there’s a shy leather note and a possible black licorice nuance that you have to dig for. Finally, many hours later, the woods fade in intensity and a silky, creamy, amber sweetness rises, but it’s not vanilla-based. The longevity is brutal: at first it seems like it doesn’t smell, but then it haunts you until you shower. Six sprays were enough. I see it as very masculine, though some women might like it for being resinous and woody. Ideal for cold weather, night, and special occasions, since it smells unique and is expensive. In summary: I liked the evolution and quality, but at the current price, I wouldn’t buy it. Maybe I’ll try it again and change my mind.
Honestly, it didn’t fit my expectations. Instead of Oud, it smells like labdanum (which isn’t even listed in the notes!). It’s not leather or smoky, but rather balsamic and spicy, very sweet with honey, dates, and tobacco… too gourmand for me. In the end, it incenses and reminds me a lot of Memo’s Shams Oud, which I like, but this one is excessively sweet. Since it was out of stock and I wanted to try it, I grabbed a 5ml decant. If anyone’s interested, let me know privately.
