Don’t mix the 2008 Essential, which was a work of art, with the current version, a total disappointment. The original projected for meters and lasted 6-8 hours even in summer; now it barely reaches half a meter and lacks that zesty orange freshness. The same goes for the old Lacoste fragrances compared to the new ones: Match Point, L’Homme, L.12.12… everything drags and dies without dignity. The Original Parfum barely lasts two hours, suffering through it—another letdown.

This new Essential is a domesticated, soulless version. They stripped out the tomato leaf to please everyone, following that trend of perfumers and CEOs creating bland fragrances, devoid of sex appeal or risk, overly sweet and boring. They reformulated the original under the silly excuse of a ‘Collector Edition’ to make it softer. Go for the original in the white box with the intense green label, and forget this thing.

Very basic and not very sparkling, leaning towards formal yet fresh. Perfect for daily wear, with a touch more green notes than Nautica.

In the Collector Edition, they removed the tomato leaf and boosted the concentration with a dry, sweet rose, chilled with undeclared mint. It smells more like the dry-down phase of the base, starting citrusy but lacking much complexity, leaving behind that lovely rose accent. A masterstroke by Mr. Laurent Bruyere. It’s a beauty that projects extra order and sporty cleanliness. On my skin, on a cold January day, it lasted over six hours with pleasant mid-life boosts. Don’t miss out if you can find it.
