Descripción

Jako by Karl Lagerfeld is a spicy woody fragrance for men. Launched in 1998, this composition was created by perfumer Michel Girard. The top notes unfold with plum, grapefruit, bergamot, and mandarin; the heart reveals Indian ginger, Brazilian rosewood, and cardamom; while the base notes settle with incense, leather, sandalwood, and musk.

I owned it and loved it so much. It doesn’t have cinnamon, yet to me it smelled cinnamon-like, sweet, woody, and spicy. I want to get it again.

Jako has classic lines with a modern twist. Its opening is intense; citrus ginger reigns with a strong column of rosewood, one that’s mature, crowned by a strong plum note, maybe even synthetic. The fragrance is strange and intense but not unpleasant; it reminded me in spirit of Lacoste Pour Homme, but it’s more complex. As it dries down, it becomes classic with a vintage aquatic old-fashioned wood twist. I tested it on skin and it seems to have great performance, easily lasting over 4 hours with a single spray, at least on my forearm. In the end, I didn’t decide to buy it because part of its spirit didn’t convince me: the plum note dominates the entire composition and, since it’s not entirely natural, it turns synthetic and strange. However, it has excellent performance, at least that’s what I deduce from a single spray. A must-test, since it’s not an easy fragrance and buying it blind could be disastrous despite its many positive points.

  • It’s like that young guy from the late 90s who started playing with the term ‘metrosexual’ without losing his masculinity. I was tired of the heavy scents from the previous decade and that oceanic wave that was all the rage. Jako opens with a lemony note, slightly bitter from the grapefruit, with hints of ginger; it feels fresh and youthful, exactly what’s needed, but it also demands some punch. It’s when the citrus gives way to the sweet part: a plum that shines through, while the incense makes it dark and interesting, a bit heavy but without losing freshness. Deep down in the base, there are well-articulated woods and leather beating in unison, giving it the right amount of personality. These notes are felt without being overbearing or drawing too much attention; the perfume aims to stay soft, fresh, talc-like, and slightly woody. Plum, ginger, woods, a touch of incense, and a shy leather adorn the fragrance, just like the citrus sparks that become more relaxed. It doesn’t have a huge trail, but its longevity is good. Very versatile, elegant, and flexible for any setting. Interesting.

I love it, it smells powdery, like plum, wood, and incense… it has a feminine touch and a lot of class, plus it’s long-lasting. I bought three 100ml bottles years ago for 20 euros each and now I see it’s discontinued, too bad I already used them up. It’s one of my favorites and definitely the best by Karl Lagerfeld. 8/10.

  • I bought it at a good price in Mexico a year ago and at first I thought it was simple, with little sillage and longevity. Today I sprayed it again and it captivated me. It opens very citrusy, you can smell the bergamot, mandarin, and grapefruit over a slightly sweet base thanks to the plum. The dry down is masculine: leather, cardamom, and incense. I see it as ideal for warm environments and offices; it’s not a common scent this time of year.

No Karl Lagerfeld fragrance leaves anyone indifferent, and this is no exception. The first thing I thought when smelling it was: it smells like those fashion magazines (Vogue, Cosmopolitan…) from the 90s that my sister used to buy in the US, where the scents of several fragrances were mixed in the inserts glued to the pages. That’s how I first smelled famous perfumes like CK Obsession, CK Escape, CK One, Tommy Hilfiger, DKNY Be Delicious, or Davidoff Cool Water. It’s a smart system to promote fragrances, with the scent of new paper and plastic. That mix of plum and citrus is quite particular. In the end, I think that among that battle of notes, the middle ones (Brazilian rosewood, Indian ginger, and cardamom) come out victorious. It’s a good fragrance, quite classic and for a target over 40. Ideal for the office, business, bank errands, or job interviews; it’s very solemn. Preferably for cool climates (or in offices with max air conditioning, or even server rooms where the air needs to be above normal).
