  What a great exercise in ‘cochenuvism’. I’m not a fan of the genre, but mixing leathery tobacco with osmanthus is superior. It gives it a feminine touch that balances and makes it cleaner. Although I’m wary of osmanthus, which can be too phosphorescent, here its blinding shine is like fresh, smooth leather. Even if it’s a bit aggressive and ostentatious, like ‘new rich’, they make a good team. The title might be misleading; I don’t see orientalist or traditional China, but rather today’s developing China, with drones and shopping malls. Maybe there’s space for some wild vegetal freshness amidst the osmanthus, like a park in the concrete. In the end, that leathery power fades, leaving an incense-based, hollow, and lugubrious base.
