Psicostasis
Solid piece of ‘cochenuvism’. I’m not a fan of the genre, but blending leathery tobacco with osmanthus is a winner. It adds a feminine touch that balances and cleans it up. Though I usually bite my fist at osmanthus, which tends to be phosphorescent, here its blinding shine is like fresh, smooth leather. Aggressive, ostentatious, a bit ‘new rich’, but they make a great pair. The title is misleading: no orientalist or mysterious China here, just today’s developing China, with drones and shopping malls. Maybe there’s room for some wild vegetal freshness, like a park in the middle of concrete. In the end, that leathery power fades, leaving an incense-based, hollow, and lugubrious base.
