I picked this up on a trip to Cuba, and it smells like a Cuban woman: a stunning female who makes you feel like you’re leading a revolution with your fist raised, shouting ‘Patria o muerte’. Ufff. It smells like the Caribbean: fruits, beach, and son music, but also jungle, tobacco, and rum. I loved it the moment I got it.
Black Coral (1984) is by Suchel Camacho S.A., a joint venture between Cuba and Spain created by Cuban perfumers Ricardo García and Rafael Molina. It’s a floral aldehyde fragrance with musky notes, great projection and trail. A well-balanced accord of jasmine and roses wrapped in a voluptuous carnation stands out, set against an amber-musky base with animalized civet notes blending with sandalwood. This accord reminds me of Lanvin’s Arpège. It has huge personality and incredible longevity; I recommend wearing it moderately, especially at night.
Here’s a Caribbean oriental with everything that implies. An original scent with long-lasting power and that tropical storm character that picks its friends and allies carefully. Fabulous for hot nights where you’ll dance all night long, sweating sensuality that, when it merges with the sea breeze, lets you take over the olfactory space around you. Too bad you can only get it by going to Cuba.
