  It’s an interesting reorchestration of the classic Patou pour homme considered by many a masterpiece. It starts with an explosion of quality citrus notes alongside green notes (probably tarragon) that give it freshness. Over time the scent shifts slightly as patchouli lavender and a resinous background of frankincense or olibanum appear all adding sweetness. Although it’s claimed otherwise I can’t smell the leather but I do detect the pepper very in the background. On English forums they literally tear this perfume apart saying it doesn’t resemble the original; which is obvious since the restrictions on high-quality ingredients from the past are impossible to use today. Also the high price is criticized for what it offers (with which I partly agree). In my opinion it’s an excellent fragrance: it’s original modern with vintage fougère elements and shows quality throughout the composition making it very hard to distinguish the notes. Sillage is moderate to low but longevity is good (around 8 hours). If you can find it at a good price I totally recommend trying it.

  I’m surprised that this version of the legendary and highly-rated vintage Patou Pour Homme doesn’t have the recognition it deserves. As alexis_m says it’s an excellent fragrance with a compositional quality that deserves to stand on its own. Comparisons are its Achilles’ heel but Thomas Fontaine did a magnificent job: it’s complex elegant intense and spicy. It doesn’t smell outdated; the violet leaf tarragon and galbanum blend so well they create an intense addictive aroma. The opening is spectacular with citrus pepper and galbanum that remind me of something fruity but hard to identify. I agree that the leather if it’s there is very weak and I don’t appreciate it; it’s hard to distinguish the notes. The overall impression is quality Patou elegance and an aroma that stands out from current trends. Projection is high and longevity exceeds 8 hours. If you forget about the vintage beast this captivates. In my opinion it’s not a leather scent; it’s closer to an aromatic-spicy one. The bottle with acid-etched initials is as elegant as the contents. Forget the comparisons with the vintage; this is worth it on its own.

  The Héritage Collection is Patou’s attempt to revive its classics. With the name Jean Patou pour Homme comparisons to the originals are inevitable and for me trying the 2013 version is like hearing Yesterday without knowing the Beatles: a blind flight with no points of contact with the original. Upon application it smells of moss and smoke with a strong citrus base. Thomas Fontaine achieves an oakmoss aura (less dense than the original) where creamy musky galbanum dominates. It’s predominantly soapy green with a subliminal sweetness; after hours aside from vanilla violet soft wood and ambergris only that green-floral-sweet soap sensation remains with a leather touch that by the way justifies the high price. It’s a good perfume but it lacks the happy ending to satisfy the huge expectations set by the name. I wonder how much Fontaine deviated from the original; musically it’s a version not a remake because a true remake would have been done by Jean Kerléo who knows the real intent. It’s expensive at full price and hard to handle for most though it has a perfect sillage that doesn’t overwhelm neighbors (I would have wanted it more potent; the new Derby is superior). If you can grab it for under 100 euros it’s an interesting piece if you like this type of composition.
