A scandalous proposal, citrusy and boreal, very much in the style of Puig’s Agua Brava. It’s attractive, but its longevity is terribly short! Perhaps that’s why it’s so cheap.
Acqua di Selva is one of the quintessential green perfumes. Its structure is that of a classic fougère: lavender, tonka, and oakmoss. Around it sparkle all sorts of green-citrus notes until the oakmoss and vetiver settle in strongly. My mental image of this fragrance is ‘green velvet.’ That’s how I’d define it: velvety, fresh, natural, sophisticated, elegant, relaxing, mature. Wearing it is a whole tribute to oneself. Its longevity isn’t bad for a cologne, just like its trail. It’s not a strong fragrance, but you’ll smell it, and the aroma will last several hours. On top of that, its price, which is more than reasonable, means there’s no problem in reapplying without guilt. If you’re, like me, a lover of green fragrances, you can’t miss out. Rating: 10/10.
I thought I remembered this because my father’s uncle, the family’s ‘bon vivant,’ used it, but I’d forgotten about it for years. I mean, I thought I remembered because that happens with other things too; they lodge in that weird part of memory where we’re not sure if the recollection is real or invented. But no, a few days ago while watching the original Pink Panther with my nephews, I saw that David Niven (the archetype of the bon vivant) has Acqua di Selva on his desk along with a Yardley and a Napoleon Sir Robert. Seeing it in the ‘reminds me of’ section, it absolutely does—it reminds me of all of those, the typical perfume of that era, and several others, since that ‘trend’ lasted about 50 years, an eternity for younger generations. I don’t know about other countries, but in Argentina it’s not cheap at all; it costs as much as a Chanel or Armani, and judging by what I’ve seen, it’s probably not worth it. Maybe in a few years it’ll be more accessible and I can add it to my collection.
