  Dominique Ropion is a genius I adore; nobody today handles floral chords with his mastery, from his brutal Carnal Flowers to this sexy ‘New Romantic’ Fleur de Cassie. It sounds confusing, but in 19th-century France, cassia and mimosa were often confused, so he keeps that classic ambiguity where the yellow, fragrant mimosa reigns—the one Mérimée described in Carmen. The mimosa scent here is potent, bright, and warm like winter sun, golden and sensual like Carmen’s lips. Ropion preserves all its facets: honeyed and powdery, with touches of rose, jasmine, and a spicy clove, all finished by the timid whisper of cassia absolute, like a forbidden love. The dry down is woody, with soft sandalwood turning animalistic and leathery to dramatize that free, passionate Carmen. It’s a scent that contracts in search of freedom, transgressive, unique, rooted in the past but delivering an avant-garde result. Longevity is great, projection is just right, and the essences are high quality. Worn like a haute couture suit: a studied, glamorous ensemble that isn’t pretentious, refined elegance. Even if I don’t usually like florals, I have to surrender to such a powerful work of art. Rating: 9.7

It might seem confusing, but in 19th-century France, cassia and mimosa were often blended, and Ropion keeps that historical ambiguity alive: the bouquet queen is the Australian mimosa, the one Mérimée described when talking about Carmen. The scent is potent, bright, and warm like winter sun, golden and sensual like Carmen’s lips. It keeps all its facets: honeyed and powdery, with hints of rose, jasmine, and the spice of clove, all topped off by the timid whisper of cassia absolute, like a forbidden love. The dry down is woody, with a soft sandalwood that turns animalistic and leathery to dramatize that free, passionate Carmen, unbound. It’s a fragrance that contracts in search of freedom, avant-garde and unique, drawn from the opulence of the past but delivering an innovative result.   Didn’t like it. I ordered a sample and this floral with clove and mimosa smells like sweat or intoxication, plus it’s very powdery. No thanks. Rating: 4
