The top notes unfold a citrus effervescence with clementine, lime, bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, and aldehydes. The heart reveals a lush floral bouquet where davana, geranium, periwinkle, magnolia, May rose, karo karoundé flower, and cyclamen intertwine. The base is a complex architecture combining davana, balsam fir, elemi, cedar, cedar needles, cyperus, coffee, ambergris, cardamom, ginger, patchouli, balsam of Peru, carrot seeds, vanilla, tonka bean, wine lees, pink pepper, sandalwood, musk, and oakmoss.

Sounds like an old friend, doesn’t it? Pierre de Velay #25 opens with elemi, cardamom, and citrus: very aromatic, refined, and elegant. Perfect for daytime and super versatile. It leans more masculine but isn’t exclusive, so women can wear it too. Pleasant and uncomplicated. Many say it smells like a polished version of Roja’s ‘A Midsummer Dream.’ Is that right? 100%! It’s that elemi with very spicy cardamom that tickles the nose with citrus, has body, but poor performance. I prefer PDV #25 because it’s lighter (without being watery), the cardamom is 50% less spicy, and the performance is modest. It’s more refined, soft, and balanced. It could be the ‘Eau Fraiche’ version of A Midsummer Dream. But at $680, the bottle really bugs me. I own more expensive perfumes, but when you weigh it against A Midsummer Dream ($380), it’s hard to justify the extra $300. Not worth it for that reason. If it were $100 less, no problem. As the song says: ‘I appreciate it… but no!’
