Pierre de Velay No. 9 by Roja Dove is an oriental fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2019, this composition was created by perfumer Roja Dove. In its opening, the scent unfolds with top notes of lemon and bergamot, giving way to a floral heart of May rose and jasmine. The trail settles on a warm, complex base combining vanilla, benzoin, ambergris, cashmere wood, musk, cedar, labdanum, and patchouli.

Mediocre, disappointing, and yes, expensive. The opening is an avoirdupois base with very feminine florals, but the scent is extremely weak, lacking power and body; it feels watery and the flowers lack precision. It doesn’t smell like a $680 perfume, but rather a generic $100 one. Even though I’m a Roja fan, I don’t endorse everything they do: they ask for a lot of money, and my expectations match their exclusivity and quality. To clarify, it doesn’t smell bad or synthetic; it’s pleasant in its own right, but it smells like a cheap designer fragrance at an absurd price with poor longevity and sillage. It’s boring and linear. If they asked for half the price, I’d still think the same. If I have to gift my girlfriend between Creed’s Royal Princess Oud and this PDV #9, I’d choose the Creed without hesitation. I’m not saying they smell alike, but they’re suited for the same occasions with similar ease. Discontinued perfume. A rip-off.
